A Superior Court judge ordered 17-year-old Adonis Smith rearrested last week after Smith, who was free on bond while drug and weapons charges were pending, failed to appear in court.

Court officials said they are preparing a warrant charging him with first-degree failure to appear in court.

Smith, of 320 Colman St., New London, was charged last summer with carrying a pistol without a permit and distributing a controlled substance. New London police said that in August 2018 they seized from him almost 15 grams of marijuana, 2.6 grams of crack cocaine and a .25-caliber semi-automatic pistol.

His case was transferred from juvenile court to adult court based on the seriousness of the charges and Smith's prior history.

While his recent charges were pending, he was free on a $150,000 bond, under electronic monitoring by the Department of Adult Probation and on home confinement, except for school.

Judge Hillary B. Strackbein placed his case on the court docket last week after receiving a report from the probation department that he was in violation of the conditions of his release.

When he failed to appear in court on Thursday, Strackbein raised Smith's bond to $200,000, cash or surety, and ordered him rearrested, according to his court file.

Following his arrest last summer, Smith had been placed in an unlocked juvenile facility in Litchfield. He had somebody pick him up and remained at large for weeks, until he was located on Sept. 20 and taken into custody, according to officials.

Smith qualifies for court-appointed attorneys based on his inability to pay. He had been represented by attorney Erica Rodriguez, who is his aunt, but she has withdrawn from the case, according to the court file. Smith is expected to be appointed another attorney when he returns to court.
