Norwich — A two-alarm fire damaged a popular barbeque joint in Norwich on Wednesday.

The fire was reported to have started in an inside smoker at Uncle D’s Blazin BBQ at 146 W. Town St. in the Yantic section of the city, adjacent to Ace Hardware, Yantic fire Chief Bill Eyberse said.

Firefighters arrived to find smoke billowing from the building and a fire inside that had extended from the kitchen area into an attic space, according to Eyberse. They made an aggressive interior attack and extinguished the blaze within a half-hour after arrival, he said. The fire was reported to be under control shortly before 9 p.m.

No injuries were reported, Eyberse said. The extent of the damage was not obvious from the outside of the building.

The Yantic Fire Department was joined by multiple other departments, with firetrucks staging at a nearby shopping center. The fire marshal’s office is investigating.
