Man pleads guilty to selling narcotics after person overdosed and died at Mohegan Sun

A New Haven man pleaded guilty to narcotics charges Tuesday in New Haven federal court following an investigation into the overdose death of a person at the Mohegan Sun casino in May 2021, according to the U.S. Attorney’s office.

Jerrard Santiago, 43, of New Haven pleaded guilty to two counts of possession with intent to distribute, and distribution of a controlled substance. Santiago faces a maximum of 20 years on each count. Judge Jeffrey A. Meyer scheduled sentencing for April 22.

A news release from the U.S. Attorney’s office cited court documents and statements made in court saying the investigation began after an individual who had purchased narcotics in a restroom of the Mohegan Sun casino on May 18, 2021, overdosed on the casino floor and died approximately 11 days later.

Investigators bought fentanyl and heroin from Santiago on Feb. 3, 2023, and then fentanyl and cocaine from him on Feb. 14. Santiago has been detained since his arrest on March 30, 2023.

The case is being investigated by the Drug Enforcement Administration and the Mohegan Tribal Police.
