New London — Traffic backed up quickly Wednesday morning after two cars collided on the southbound side of the Gold Star Memorial Bridge.

The state Department of Transportation said the Interstate 95 crash happened just before 8 a.m. Crews initially closed the right and center lanes, leaving only one lane operational on the under-construction bridge.

Crews cleared the wreck shortly before 9 a.m. At that point, traffic was congested back to Exit 88 in Groton.
