    Man charged with DUI in Ledyard crash, car fires

    Ledyard — A head-on collision that ended with both vehicles engulfed in flames sent two people to the hospital with minor injuries Saturday evening, town police said.

    About 6:30 p.m., a white Subaru operated by Samuel McGrath, 23, of Ledyard, swerved into the opposite lane on Gallup Hill Road in the area of Highland Drive and struck an oncoming gray pickup truck, police said. Both vehicles caught fire.

    Ledyard, Gales Ferry and Mashantucket firefighters responded to the scene, along with Ledyard police and American Ambulance and Lawrence + Memorial Hospital medics. The two occupants of the pickup were transported to the hospital with minor injuries, police said.

    McGrath was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, police said.

    No further information was immediately available.
