Westerly man charged with assault in stabbing

Norwich — Police charged a Westerly man with assault Tuesday in connection with an attack last January, during which the male victim suffered a stab wound to the chest and a head laceration after the suspect allegedly threw several household items at him.

Michael T. Brown, 21, of 71 White Rock Road, Westerly, was charged with second-degree assault and disorderly conduct. He was arraigned Wednesday in Norwich Superior Court and posted a $75,000 cash surety bond and was released. He is next due in court Jan. 9.

Police said they were called to an undisclosed Norwich address and found a male victim suffering from a laceration to his head. The puncture wound to his chest was discovered during his ambulance ride to the William W. Backus Hospital, an arrest warrant affidavit stated.

The victim told police that he was sleeping shortly after midnight on Jan. 7 when he heard a loud banging at the door. The victim opened the bedroom door to the kitchen and Brown allegedly attacked him, first hitting him in the face with a closed fist before allegedly grabbing a porcelain bird statue and throwing it at the victim, striking him in the head. Brown allegedly threw other items, including a candleholder and a can opener, before grabbing a kitchen knife off the counter.

Brown allegedly reached around a second victim and swung the knife three times at the victim. During the alleged attack, Brown allegedly accused the male victim of treating someone badly and threatened to kill him.

Brown allegedly fled the scene when the second victim yelled, “the cops are coming.”

Upon his release from custody, Brown was ordered to have no contact with the two victims, to come no closer than 100 yards and to stay away from their residence.
