Westerly man seriously injured in Pawcatuck crash

Stonington -- A Westerly man was seriously injured when his car struck a tree on Elm Ridge Road in Pawcatuck Thursday night and then flipped on its roof.

Kyle McInerney, 35, of Beatrice Street, was taken to Westerly Hospital and then flown by Life Star helicopter to Rhode Island Hospital.

Police said McInerney was driving in the area of Soundview Drive at 9:46 p.m. when he drove off the road and struck an oak tree. The car flipped on its roof and the upper section of the tree split and fell on the car.

McInerney was trapped inside and had to be extricated by firefighters. The regional accident reconstruction team is investigating the crash.
