Firefighters battle blaze in New London
New London — Firefighters on Wednesday afternoon battled a two-alarm blaze at the multifamily home at 28 Rogers St., at the corner of Elm Street.
The fire was reported about 12:50 p.m., and firefighters arrived to find fire already erupting from the building's windows and smoke filling the neighborhood. There were reports by neighbors of explosions inside. Firefighters were still at the scene at 1:45 p.m.
The 2½-story home appears to be in disrepair, with numerous piles of debris scattered around the front and back yards. Neighbors said they were under the impression it is vacant and has been for several years.
Stephen Thompson, manager of the neighboring home at 24 Rogers St., said the home is a frequent hangout for squatters and is an ongoing problem.
City records show the home is owned by James Robinson.
New London firefighters were joined at the scene by personnel from Waterford, whose ladder truck was in use alongside New London's. The Red Cross said Wednesday night that it was assisting one adult after the fire.
The city fire marshal's office is investigating the cause of the fire.
