    Baseball roundup

Willie Bloomquist of the Royals slides safely into second base in the third inning of Saturday afternoon's game against the Rockies at Kansas City, Mo. Rockies shortstop Troy Tulowitzki, left, waits for the throw. The Rockies won 3-0.

    INTERLEAGUE

    Dodgers 6, Tigers 4

Casey Blake homered for the third time in five games and made a critical defensive play in the ninth, Matt Kemp also hit a solo shot and Blake DeWitt had a two-run triple to lead Los Angelesto a victory over Detroit Saturday night.

Rookie John Ely (3-1) allowed two runs and eight hits through six-plus innings and struck out three in his fifth big league start, helping the Dodgers win for the 13th time in 14 games.

The 24-year-old right-hander has a 2.45 ERA in his last four outings and has walked only one during that stretch.

Ely walked Brandon Inge on four pitches in the first inning, snapping a string of 89 consecutive batters without a base on balls, but retired his next nine in a row and didn't let another runner get past second base.

Detroit's Brennan Boesch greeted Ramon Troncoso with a home run to dead-center leading off the eighth. The right-hander walked his next batter, got a double-play ball from Gerald Laird, and then hit Austin Jackson flush on the helmet with a 2-2 pitch. Manager Jim Leyland and trainer Kevin Rand rushed to the aid of the talented rookie, who was able to make it to the dugout under his own power and was replaced by a pinch-runner.

Jonathan Broxton gave up a run-scoring ground-rule double to Boesch in the ninth before getting his 10th save. One batter earlier, Blake made a diving stop on Miguel Cabrera's sharp grounder toward the hole and got the force at second.

    Athletics 1, Giants 0

Gio Gonzalez retired his final 20 batters and Oakland scored an unearned run to beat Matt Cain and San Francisco in the Bay Bridge Series.

An error by first baseman Aubrey Huff set up Coco Crisp's sacrifice fly in the third inning. The Giants managed only three hits and matched a season high with their fourth straight loss.

Gonzalez (5-3) allowed two hits in eight innings. He gave up a single to Freddy Sanchez in the first, then a one-out walk to Huff followed by a single to Andres Torres in the second. After that, he went 1-2-3 the rest of the way.

Andrew Bailey finished the three-hitter for his seventh save.

Matt Cain (2-4) pitched a five-hitter for his first complete game since last Aug. 3 against Houston.

    Twins 8, Brewers 7

Jason Kubel's sacrifice fly in the 12th lifted Minnesota over Milwaukee.

Jesse Crain (1-0) picked up the victory for the Twins despite issuing a five-pitch walk to Prince Fielder - his fourth of the game - to start the 12th. Crain got the next two batters and struck out Jody Gerut looking to end the inning.

Manny Parra (0-3) issued a leadoff walk to Alexi Casilla. Joe Mauer followed with a single and AL batting leader Justin Morneau walked to load the bases.

One out later, Kubel sent a fly to right fielder Corey Hart, whose throw was off line and not close while Mauer streaked home for the win to raise Minnesota's home record to 14-6 in front of the largest crowd - 39,152 - in the new ballpark.

    Nationals 7, Orioles 6

Adam Dunn's two-run single capped a sixth-inning rally that carried Washington past Baltimore, which wasted a bizarre inside-the-park homer by Adam Jones.

Washington trailed 6-3 before scoring four runs in the sixth against starter Brad Bergesen and reliever Mark Hendrickson (1-2). Tyler Walker (1-0) got the final two outs in the top of the sixth, and Matt Capps worked the ninth for his major league-leading 16th save in 16 tries.

Jones hit the second inside-the-park homer in the three-year history of Nationals Park - and the second in four days. With a runner on in the fourth, Jones hit a drive to deep center that sent Nyjer Morgan to the base of the wall. The ball hit Morgan's glove and bounced out, and Morgan immediately went into a tirade. Left fielder Josh Willingham retrieved the ball, but too late to prevent Jones from circling the bases.

    White Sox 4, Marlins 1

Alex Rios hit a two-run homer and Gavin Floyd pitched 6 1-3 sharp innings to help Chicago beat Florida.

Rios drove in three runs for the White Sox, who won back-to-back games for the first time since April 25 when they swept the Seattle Mariners. Chicago has only won consecutive games three times this season.

Floyd (2-4) came in, allowing five runs or more in each of his last three starts, but he had his best outing of the season against the Marlins. He allowed just one run and six hits. Bobby Jenks earned his seventh save.

    Angels 10, Cardinals 7

Scott Kazmir ended a string of three straight losses with his best outing of the season and Los Angeles backed him with 13 hits in a victory over the Cardinals.

The Angels have won three of four and became the first team to score in double figures against the Cardinals.

Kazmir (3-4) gave up Matt Holliday's fifth homer, ending a 107 at-bat homer drought, and then walked David Freese and Colby Rasmus in the second. The left-hander retired the next 17 in a row and left with a 10-3 lead, allowing three hits in seven innings to match his season high.

    Rockies 3, Royals 0

Jeff Francis and three relievers combined on a six-hitter and Troy Tulowitzki homered to help Colorado beat Kansas City.

Francis, who won 17 games in 2007 and missed all of last season after having shoulder surgery, earned his first victory since Aug. 25, 2008. He held the Royals to five hits over 6 1-3 innings while walking two and striking out three. Francis (1-0) has given up just one run and 12 hits in 13 1-3 innings since coming off the disabled list.

Tulowitzki broke up a scoreless pitching duel with a two-out sixth inning home run on the first pitch from right-hander Kyle Davies (3-3). He gave up one run and five hits in six innings. Davies struck out six and didn't walk a batter for the first time in nine starts this season.

    Rays 4, Astros 2

Houston native Jeff Niemann struck out five in seven efficient innings, Dioner Navarro had a two-run double and the Tampa Bay Rays got away with some sloppy play to beat the Astros.

The 27-year-old Niemann (4-0), a former first-round draft pick out of Rice, allowed four hits and one walk. He hasn't given up more than three earned runs in any of his nine starts.

    Cubs 5, Rangers 4 (10)

Pinch-hitter Mike Fontenot had the tiebreaking RBI single in the 10th inning and the Chicago Cubs beat Texas, ending the Rangers' five-game winning streak.

Darren O'Day (1-2) gave up hits to all three batters he faced in the 10th, when Tyler Colvin had a leadoff double before Kosuke Fukudome and Fontenot both had singles to right to make it 4-3. Another run scored on Derrek Lee's grounder with the bases loaded.

    Diamondbacks 8, Blue Jays 5

Chris Young drove in four runs and Edwin Jackson was stellar through his first seven innings to help Arizona defeat Toronto.

Adam LaRoche added two RBI, and Conor Jackson and Mark Reynolds each drove in a run for the Diamondbacks.
