Stuff of Legend: Kate Hepburn's House

Katharine Hepburn's former home is found on Fenwick's scenic eastern tip. Builder Frank Sciame renovated the estate in 2005, including raising the waterfront building five feet to protect it from Long Island Sound.

The former Katharine Hepburn estate is up for sale. The Connecticut actress may have died more than eight years ago, but her legend still lives at the beachfront estate.

This is where actor Spencer Tracy is rumored to have visited Hepburn during their 30-year love affair; where she withdrew in the years before her death; and where, in the style of her one-time suitor Howard Hughes, a daring pilot could land a seaplane on the beach outside the house.

This is where the Hepburn family summered for almost 100 years; where the family's ancestral home was destroyed by a hurricane in the 1930s; and where Hepburn would design a replacement dream house using toy blocks a year later.

A dream house by any stretch of the imagination, 10 Mohegan Avenue underwent a total renovation by a New York builder two years after Hepburn's death. The three-level home located at the tip of beautiful Fenwick offers dazzling views and total privacy, with the Sound on one side and a pond on the other; plus six bedrooms, each with its own private bath; a private dock and beach; and 680 feet of direct waterfront.

The four-time Oscar winner spent every weekend she could at her 8,000-square-foot retreat. She purchased a fire truck for the town of Old Saybrook, shopped at the local markets, and played tennis at Fenwick courts. Although she was born in Hartford, in her will the actress revealed where home was: "I, Katharine Hepburn, of Fenwick."

"Fenwick is and has always been my paradise," wrote Hepburn, in her biography.
