A Touch of Ireland at Home

10 ways to add the color green to your home and landscaping

    By Gretchen A. Peck

Ireland certainly earns its nickname. Traveling across the country leads you through quaint villages, small towns and acres of farmland. Hillside fields stitched by rustic stone walls are laid out like an agrarian patchwork quilt—squares and rectangles in every glorious shade of green. It is an awesome sight.

As an homage to the “Emerald Isle” on this St. Patrick’s Day, Welcome Home offers 10 ways to add a touch of green to your home’s décor and landscaping.

#1: Toss in some throw pillows.

Throw pillows are one of the easiest ways to add a pop of color to interior living spaces.

#2: Indulge in a new blanket.

Whether for the bedroom or as a living room throw, a warm knit blanket adds color and texture to the space.

    #3: Freshen up the walls.

A deep shade of green added to interior room walls allows furnishings in lighter colors to “pop.”

    #4: Add a statement piece.

Introduce color with furnishings and fabrics. Sold by Target, this Christopher Knight-brand Mariposa chair, with emerald-green velvet upholstery, draws on Mid-Century Modern design.

#5: Lay down an area rug.

If your home has hardwood floors, an area rug can be a comfortable and warm addition for all members of the family.

#6: Change up your window treatments.

In interior spaces with otherwise neutral color schemes, window treatments might allow for a minimal but bold use of color.

#7: Add a touch of decorative flair.

Consider adding color to a room with little finishing touches, like picture frames, candles and vases.

    #8: Don’t forget the tabletop.

Coordinating color in dishes, serving ware and stemware creates a visual theme for indoor and outdoor dining.

    #9: Plant evergreens.

Evergreen bushes and trees keep your landscaping looking lively all year long. Evergreens include varieties of conifer trees and shrubs, such as boxwoods, rhododendrons and hollies.

    #10: Let clover flourish.

Clover can be mistaken for pesky weed, but it’s a healthy addition to any yard. It’s resilient, maintaining its green even in challenging climates, and pollinators love the stuff. A three-leaf variety of clover—shamrocks, or trifolium dubium—is Ireland’s National Plant. Happy St. Patrick’s Day!
