The Lonesome Polecat: Darien is so defensive, rankings, NOTABLES, etc.

    Howdy,

Three-and-out. Three-and-out. Over-and-over in the third quarter of last Friday’s Darien vs. Southington game, it was three-and-out for both offenses.

It got increasingly tedious as the quarter slogged on. It got increasingly frustrating for both offenses.

It was also a testament to just how dang good both Darien and the Blue Knights are defensively, too.

It was fitting, then, when Blue Wave junior Connor O’Malley returned his second interception for a 21-yard touchdown with 14 seconds left in the game. It gave Darien a 24-8 win in a Connecticut High School Football Alliance matchup between two CIAC Class LL behemoths.

“They’ve got eight (defensive starters) back, and they’re a top 10 team, I don’t care what anyone says,” Darien head coach Rob Trifone said. “We’ve got eight back. So it was a defensive struggle. We were fortunate to hit those quick strikes to (Michael) Minicus early.”

Junior outside linebacker Charlie Silsby had a team-high nine tackles with an interception and half-a-sack for the Blue Wave (2-0), ranked fourth in The Day's Top 10 state coaches’ poll. Senior outside linebacker Sam Wilson had seven tackles, sophomore end David Evanchick had five tackles and a sack, senior Will Bothwell had three tackles and two sacks, and classmate Austin Dehmel added an interception.

“We’ve been hanging our hats on defense for many years now,” Trifone said, who has coached Darien to three LL titles (2015-17). “As good as our offenses were, we always take lot of pride in our defense. My defensive coordinator, Mike Forget, week-in and week-out comes up with a great game plan. Not only does he come up with a great game plan, he teaches it all week. He’s a great teacher."

Southington (1-1) was ranked sixth in the coaches’ poll prior to Friday’s game.

It looked as if Darien could pull away for good by halftime as seniors Peter Graham (quarterback) and Michael Minicus (receiver) hooked up for three first-half touchdowns.

The game was scoreless when Graham threw into double coverage on fourth-and-5 from the Blue Knights’ 34. Minicus went up between his defenders and snared Graham’s pass for a touchdown and 6-0 lead with 4 minutes, 19 seconds left in the first quarter.

The two hooked up on a 28-yard touchdown pass play to make it 12-0 Darien with 34 seconds left in the quarter.

The Blue Wave’s offense, featuring multiple new starters such as Graham, began to get bogged down in the second quarter. They needed O’Malley to help jumpstart them by intercepting a pass at their own 21-yard line and returning it to the Southington 45.

Graham threw a pretty pass to Minicus on the next play to push Darien’s lead to 18-0 with 10 seconds left in the half.

Graham completed 15 of 32 passes for 236 yards and three touchdowns. Minicus had four catches for 115 yards.

Both teams went three-and-out on their first five drives of the second half. Both defenses, in particular, ruined one another’s running game.

Southington had 26 carries for 18 yards. The Blue Wave had 26 carries for minus-1 yard.

Graham hooked up with senior Ryan Mulliken for 29-yard pass play with under 40 seconds left in the third quarter. It was the first first down of the second half.

Offense wasn’t an issue for either team in Week 1. Darien won 42-0 against Fairfield Ludlowe, which was coming off its best season in 47 years (7-3).

Southington thumped Conard, 54-21. That’s the same Conard that went to West Haven last Friday and gave the latter a shocking 33-8 beating.

“(The Blue Knights) were blitzing two or three gaps, sending what we call five and six-man pressure,” Trifone said. “It’s hard to run against five-and-six-man pressure in the spread (offense). The spread, you’ve got to throw the ball. That said, we tried to throw the ball from time-to-time, and they had great coverage.

“I’ve got to watch the tape before I really criticize anything. I know that we were running against a very tough front. They returned three linebackers from last year, two of their defensive linemen, and most of their secondary. So we knew it was going to be a close game.”

We’re not sure if they’ll be a Polecat or not next week because America’s Team, the Connecticut Sun, swept the Los Angeles Sparks in their WNBA semifinal series and are headed to the Finals against either the Las Vegas Aces or Washington Mystics. Polecat staffers cover El Sol as well as football, so we’re all going to be extra busy until the Finals are over. Please stand by.
