Local roundup: Sun sign Odyssey Sims for rest of season

The Connecticut Sun have signed veteran guard Odyssey Sims to a rest-of-season contract.

The 5-foot-8 Sims, a former Baylor All-American, signed a seven-day hardship contract on Aug. 3 after Bria Hartley suffered a season-ending knee injury. She has played three games for Connecticut, but has come off the bench to average 10 points and four assists in the last two games.

The Sun finished their final road trip of the season on Thursday night against the Sparks in Los Angeles (visit www.theday.com for a recap), return home to host the Minnesota Lynx on Sunday, then begin the WNBA playoffs next week against an opponent to be determined.

    • UConn announced it will play a non-conference game this season (Jan. 26) at Tennessee. The starting time and television network have yet to be determined. The Huskies beat the Lady Vols 75-56 last season and lead the series 16-9.

UConn’s non-conference schedule is now set. The Huskies will host Northeastern, Texas, NC State, Princeton and South Carolina and will travel to Notre Dame, Maryland and Tennessee. UConn also will compete in the Phil Knight Legacy and Basketball Hall of Fame Women’s Showcase at neutral sites.

    • Mike Evans drove in Lelo Martinez in the fourth inning with what proved to be the winning run as the Clippers defeated the Sonics 6-2 in Game 1 of the Eastern Connecticut Major League World Series on Wednesday night. Martinez was 3-for-3 and scored two runs while Al Jordan-Johnson and Jeremy Santos each doubled.

Shawn Nadeau went the distance, allowing only two hits and striking out eight while retiring straight batters from the second to six inning. Kyle Richards had a triple and Juan Cruz and RBI single for the Sonics.
