Local roundup: Three Sun players invited to USA Basketball training camp

Colorado Springs, Colo. — Three Connecticut Sun players were among the 29 athletes invited on Tuesday to participate in the 2022 USA Basketball Women’s National Team training camp from Sept. 6-12 in Las Vegas.

Center Brionna Jones, forward Alyssa Thomas and guard Courtney Williams will take part in the camp, although they could be delayed if the Sun make a deep run in the WNBA playoffs.

The training camp will be used to select the final roster which will represent the U.S. in the 2022 FIBA World Cup from Sept. 22-Oct. 1 in Sydney, Australia. Team USA has won the last three tournaments dating back to 2010 and will play Belgium in its Group A opener on Sept. 22.

Minnesota Lynx head coach Cheryl Reeve will lead the U.S. and will be assisted by Washington Mystics head coach Mike Thibault and two colleges coaches, Kara Lawson of Duke and Joni Taylor of Texas A&M. The Sun’s Curt Miller and Lynx assistant Katie Smith will serve as court coaches.

The training camp invitee list features 11 athletes who have claimed a combined 21 Olympic (five-on-five, 3x3) and FIBA World Cup (five-on-five) gold medals. It also includes one current collegiate star, reigning national player the year Aliyah Boston of South Carolina.

Other players invited include Ariel Atkins, Shakira Austin, Kahleah Copper, Elena Delle Donne, Diamond DeShields, Stefanie Dolson, Allisha Gray, Chelsea Gray, Dearica Hamby, Myisha Hines-Allen, Natasha Howard, Rhyne Howard, Sabrina Ionescu, Betnijah Laney, Jewell Loyd, Kayla McBride, Angel McCoughtry, Arike Ogunbowale, Kelsey Plum, Aerial Powers, NaLyssa Smith, Breanna Stewart, A’ja Wilson and Jackie Young.

“I am looking forward to welcoming this amazing group of athletes to a productive training camp as we prepare for the 2022 FIBA World Cup,” Reeve said in a release. “These athletes will report to camp having just completed their WNBA seasons and it says a lot about their competitive drive and commitment to USA Basketball that they will come to Las Vegas prepared to participate at the highest level.”
