    Local roundup: Long, Berlam are winners at the O’Keefe Strides 10K race

    Waterford — Jay Long of Brooklyn won the 45th annual Jack O’Keefe Memorial Strides 10K Road Race on Sunday with a time of 41:00.

    Susan Berlam of Pawcatuck was the top women’s finisher with a time of 49:38. The race was hosted by Arc Eastern Connecticut at Camp Harkness.

    Other men’s division winners in the race were Andy Asensio of East Hampton (18-39), Matt Hargus of Pawcatuck (40-49), Thomas Sullivan Jr. of Groton (50-59) and Richard Rice of Uncasville (60-69). Women’s division winners were Sophie Zichichi of North Stonington (12-17), Danielle Kizelnik of Waterbury (18-39) and Jennifer Egan of Groton (40-49).

    Tom Palazzo of Waterford won the 5K race in a time of 20:55 and Shawn Marshall of Groton was the top women’s finisher in 25:19.

    Women’s division winners were Grace Egan of Groton (11 and under), Lily Ouillette of Moosup (12-17), Bobbi Jo Ramsey of Taftville (18-39), Christy Socha of East Lyme (40-49), Deirdre Ahern of Salem (50-59), Susan Smith of New London (60-69) and Nancy Crocker of Waterford (70 and over).

    Men’s division winners in the 5K were Andrew Ouillette of Moosup (11 and under), Brayden Zeldis of Milton, Mass. (12-17), Ben Toth of New London (18-39), Isaac Zeldis of Milton, Mass. (40-49), James Neff of Quaker Hill (50-59), Bob Hefflefinger of Niantic (60-69) and John Ficarra of Westerly (70 and over).

    College men’s hockey

    • Matthew Wood had a goal and an assist as UConn beat Vermont 3-1 in a Hockey East game. Andrew Lucas had two assists, Chase Bradley and Ty Amonte scored goals and Arsenii Sergeev made 24 saves for UConn (2-0, 2-0).

    Tristan Fraser had a goal and an assist as UConn opened its season with a 4-1 win over Vermont on Saturday night. Wood, Ryan Tverberg and Nick Capone scored goals, Logan Terness had 15 saves and Lucas had two assists for the Huskies.

    College women’s soccer

    • Jada Konte’s unassisted goal in the 45th minute snapped a 1-1 tie and lifted UConn to a 2-1 win over Marquette in a Big East Conference game. Lucy Cappadona gave UConn (6-4-1, 2-2) a 1-0 lead with a goal at 4:15 and Kaitlyn Mahoney made six saves for the Huskies.

    College field hockey

    • UConn lost to Princeton 4-2 in a nonleague game. Sol Simone had a goal and an assist, Madi Herb scored a goal, Claire Jandewerth had an assist and Cheyenne Sprecher made one save for the Huskies (7-2).

    College men’s soccer

    • UConn lost to Xavier 1-0 in a Big East game on Saturday night. Goalie Michael Stone didn’t make any saves for UConn (2-5-1, 0-2-1).

    Legion baseball

    • Zone 6 Commissioner John Krot recently announced all-star team from this summer and Waterford swept the major awards. Catcher Kenny Miller won player of the year, Aidan Whitten was the pitcher of the year and Joe Mariani was the coach of the year.

    Waterford players Preston Tabor, Conner Rowe, Anthony Jessuck, Evan McCue, Whitten and Miller were selected to the team. Ryan Trudeau and Elliot Johnson of Norwich also made the team along with Willimantic’s Gavin Covell, Matt Lafountain, AJ Rooks and Jack Valliere, Danielson’s Jacob Hernandez, Ben Jax, Aaron Dionne and Chris Jax, TriTown’s Jonathan Carita and Brayden Akana and Moosup’s Hayden Leclair.
