    H.S. roundup: St. Bernard boys clinch ECC Div. IV soccer title

    Putnam – St. Bernard clinched the Eastern Connecticut Conference Division I boys’ soccer championship on Saturday with a 1-0 victory over Putnam.

    Luke Brannegan’s second-half goal was the difference for the Saints (9-1-1, 6-0), while goalie Dan O’Brien earned the shutout by making four saves.

    In other matches:

    • Rood Apolon played a role in all three goals as Norwich Free Academy defeated Suffield 3-1 in a nonleague match. Apolon scored two goals, both assisted by Louis Hawkins, and assisted on a goal by Nate Judge for the Wildcats (7-3-1). Suffield is 10-2-1.

    Girls’ soccer

    • Alyssa Blanchette’s goal with three minutes left in the second overtime gave Bacon Academy a 2-1 win over Waterford in an ECC Division II game. The Bobcats (8-3-1, 4-2), who trailed 1-0 at halftime, tied the game on a goal by Audrey Palmer with 24 minutes left in regulation. Paige Jessuck scored in the first half for the Lancers (5-6-1, 1-3-1) and goalie Victoria Sturm made four saves. Liz Glover made six saves for Bacon.

    • Leah Comeroski scored a pair of goals while Magda Carpenter added a goal and two assists to lead Lyman Memorial to a 7-1 win over Griswold. Avery Volle added a pair of goals for the Bulldogs (10-1-1) while Allyssa Judd had a goal and an assist, Emily McKelvey scored a goal, Maddie Archer and Becca Ziegler had assists, and goalie Phoebe Carpenter made six saves. Sophia Wooten scored for Griswold (4-7) and Hannah Service made seven saves.

    • Goals by Maya Terwilliger and Carly Constantine lifted Stonington to a 2-0 win over NFA, the Bears’ 11th straight win. Finnella O’Keefe had an assist and goalie Kelsea Anderson earned the shutout for Stonington (11-1). NFA is 5-6-1.

    • Williams School and Christian Heritage played to 2-2 draw in New London. Marlee Anselmi, assisted by Skylar Frost, scored the first goal for the Blues (3-2-3) and Frost scored the second goal on a penalty kick.

    Football

    • Stylz Mitchell scored three touchdowns, one on the opening kickoff and the other on a fumble recovery, as Xavier rolled to a 45-6 victory over Fitch in a nonleague game in Middletown. Fitch is 3-2.

    • Aiden Patterson ran 10 yards for a touchdown in overtime and East Lyme’s defense produced two sacks on Griswold/Wheeler’s ensuring series as the Vikings earned a hard-fought 27-20 OT victory over the Wolverines on Friday night.

    Patterson had a big night of East Lyme (2-3), rushing for 118 yards and two touchdowns while also catching a 35-yard TD pass from Ronin McNamara. McNamara also threw a 42-yard touchdown pass to Matt Leone.

    Griswold/Wheeler is 2-3.

    Cross country

    • Williams’ Jackson Raisbeck finished first in 22:52 during meet against Rocky Hill (R.I.). Tyler Boissevain finished third (23:12) for the Blues followed by Ryan Tedeschi (fourth, 24:08), Dorian Pollard (fifth, 24:54) and Bill Qi (seventh, 26:01). In the girls’ race, Helen Godshall placed ninth overall in 26:44.

    Volleyball

    • Waterford defeated Bacon Academy 28-26, 25-21 and 25-11 on Friday night. Lillian Steinhaus had 28 assists, 11 digs and one ace for the Whalers while Marina Colonis added 14 digs, nine kills and one block, Emerson Lane 13 kills and six aces, Mia Petrini 11 digs and Erica Mugovero eight digs.

    Swimming

    • Fitch/Stonington/Wheeler/New London remained unbeaten with a 90-53 ECC win over Ledyard on Friday. The Falcons picked up individual wins from Jai-Lynn Wheeler in the 200-yard freestyle (2:16.86), Delaney Reck in the 200 IM (2:20.27), Sian Crespo in the 50 free (28.14), Laura Letellier in the 100 butterfly (1:11.01) and Abby Urgo in the 100 free (1:01.74).
