    Local roundup: No. 1 Lyman girls rally to beat St. Bernard in ECC Div. II soccer semifinals

    Lebanon — Top-seeded Lyman Memorial scored a pair of goals in the second half to rally past No. 4 St. Bernard 2-1 in the semifinals of the Eastern Connecticut Conference Division II girls’ soccer tournament on Tuesday night.

    The Bulldogs (15-1-1) will play No. 2 Plainfield in Thursday’s title game at 5:30 p.m. at Ledyard High School. Plainfield (12-3-2) beat No. 3 Montville 3-0 in the other semifinal.

    St. Bernard (9-4-3) had taken a 1-0 lead in the first half when Emily Hernandez converted a free kick, but Lyman tied the game in the 60th minute when Avery Volle set up Allysa Judd for a goal.

    The game-winner game six minutes when Judd kept the ball alive during a scramble in front of the St. Bernard goal, and Magda Carpenter put the loose ball it in the back of the net.

    Phoebe Carpenter made four saves in goal for the Bulldogs while Chloe Jennings stopped seven shots for the Saints.

    In other games:

    • Angelina Giovanni, Keriana Heredia and Morgan Yonush scored first-half goals as No. 2 Plainfield cruised to a 3-0 victory over No. 3 Montville in the ECC Division II semifinals. Sofia Rodriguez added an assist and and goalie Serene Devine made 10 saves for the Panthers. Katie Myjak stopped six shots in goal for Montville (8-7-2).

    H.S. field hockey

    • Shay Burnside converted a penalty corner by Brianna Plew early in the fourth quarter and top-seeded Stonington held on for a 3-2 win over No. 4 Waterford in the ECC tournament semifinals. Kameryan Mazzulli, who scored both goals for the Lancers (6-10-1) scored on a late penalty stroke to keep Waterford in the game.

    Anna Lettier and Nora Walsh, assisted by Olivia Duhig, gave the Bears (13-2-1) a 2-0 halftime lead. Emma Smathers made five saves for the Lancers while Madi Allard stopped two shots in goal for Stonington.

    • Sophie Ash scored an unassisted goal in the third quarter to lift second-seeded Fitch to a 1-0 victory over No. 3 East Lyme in the other semifinal. Abriel Carey made six saves to earn the shutout for the Falcons (13-4) while Jaci Felix stopped 11 shots in goal for the Vikings (8-6-3). Fitch and Stonington will meet in Thursday’s championship game at East Lyme at 3:30 p.m.

    H.S. boys’ soccer

    • Platt Tech won a penalty kick shootout 4-2 to defeat Norwich Tech in the Connecticut Technical Conference tournament. The game was tied 1-1 after regulation and overtime. Michael George, assisted by Hunter Jackson, scored in the second minute for Norwich Tech (11-3-2).

    • Top-seeded East Hampton rolled to a 6-0 victory over No. 4 Old Lyme in the Shoreline Conference semifinals. The Bellringers (12-1-1) will play No. 3 Morgan, which beat No. 2 Old Saybrook in a penalty kick shootout in the other semifinal, in Friday’s final. Old Lyme is 7-6-5.

    Women’s soccer

    • Maria Colon Figueroa scored two goals as second-seeded Babson defeated No. 7 Coast Guard Academy 2-1 in the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference tournament quarterfinals. Karagan Bulger, assisted by Anna Carleton, scored in the second half for the Bears, who finish 6-9-3, while goalie Emily Scharnitzky made eight saves.

    H.S. volleyball

    • Fifth-seeded Norwich Tech defeated No. 4 Goodwin Tech 3-2 in the CTC quarterfinals. Game scores were 25-16, 25-18, 11-25, 20-25 and 15-10. The Warriors (11-9) will play at No. 1 Prince Tech in Friday’s semifinals. Kaylee Gray had 10 kills, 11 digs and five aces for Norwich Tech while Abby Ulrich added nine kills, three digs and three aces, Caitlyn Flynn 11 digs and four aces, and Nancy Johnny 13 assists.

    • No. 2 Wheeler blanked No. 7 Putnam 25-8, 25-14, 25-16 Monday in the quarterfinals of the ECC Division II tournament. Michelle Macina had seven kills and two aces for Wheeler (15-5), which will take on No. 3 Windham in the semis at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday at Plainfield. Allison Needham added five aces and 10 assists and Skyler Morgan had four aces and four kills.

    Murphy to manage Sea Unicorns

    • Kevin Murphy, who spent the 2022 season as an assistant with the Norwich Sea Unicorns, was named manager of the Futures Collegiate Baseball League team by general manager Lee Walter, Jr. Murphy replaces Devin Belenski, who managed Unicorns for two seasons.

    Murphy attended Eastern Connecticut State University from 2018-21, played a graduate season at Nichols College in 2022, and is currently a first-year volunteer assistant coach at Division I Quinnipiac University in Hamden. Two other former members of ECSU’s national championship team, John Mesagno and Noah Plantamuro, will serve as assistants under Murphy.

    "I am thrilled and honored to be back in Norwich for the 2023 campaign,“ Murphy said in a release. ”It is an honor that the Sea Unicorns organization entrusts me in leading the program through another year of play in the FCBL.”
