    Local roundup: Fitch stuns No. 1 Griswold in ECC volleyball semis

    Groton — Katie Tuohy had 18 kills, nine digs and six blocks as fifth-seeded Fitch stunned previously unbeaten and top-seeded Griswold 15-25, 25-21, 25-21, 16-25, 15-10 in the semifinals of the Eastern Connecticut Conference Division I volleyball tournament on Wednesday.

    The Falcons (13-9) will play No. 3 Waterford in Friday’s 7 p.m. final at New London High School. The Lancers knocked off No. 2 and defending East Lyme 27-29, 25-19, 25-21, 26-24.

    Fitch beat Waterford 3-2 (Sept. 8) and 3-1 (Sept. 16) during the regular season.

    The Wolverines (20-1) swept Fitch in three games twice during the regular season.

    Isabella Ditmore had 35 assists for the Falcons and Madelyn Aldinger had 20 digs. Annalyn Cahill added 10 kills and Madalyn Fancher nine kills.

    Kuranda Ruggiero had 23 assists, nine kills, 10 digs and an ace for Griswold while Emily Aviles had 32 digs and Kierra Nielson added five kills, five blocks and three digs.

    In the second match, Marina Colonis had 16 kills, 16 digs and four aces for Waterford (17-5) while Lillian Steinhaus had 32 assists and 16 digs. Emerson Lane added 15 kills, six blocks and five aces.

    Shae McMunn had 34 assists and five aces, Skylar Bell had 17 digs and Addison Soleau had 13 kills for the Vikings (16-5). Also, Meghan Nagle had 11 digs and Carolyn Place had eight kills.

    In other matches:

    • Second-seeded Wheeler defeated No. 3 Windham 3-1 in the ECC Division II semifinals at Plainfield. Game scores were 23-35, 25-20, 25-23 and 25-19. Skylar Morgan had 10 kills and five blocks for the Lions (16-5) while Abby Butremovic added 46 digs and Anna Ruggeri had 30 assists. Wheeler will play top-seeded Lyman Memorial, a 3-0 winner over No. 4 Plainfield, in Thursday’s 4:30 p.m. final at New London. Lyman is 17-5.

    H.S. boys’ soccer

    • Griswold scored a pair of late goals to defeat Norwich Tech 3-1 in a non-league game. The Warriors (11-4-2) had tied the game early in the second half on a goal by Zach Lamitie. Griswold is 7-9-1.

    H.S. girls’ soccer

    • Williams School won its home finale with a 5-1 win over Westover. Skylar Frost had three goals and an assist to lead the Blues while Marlee Anselmi and Lucy Fader each had a goal and an assist.

    Men’s soccer

    • Third-seeded Mitchell College lost a penalty kick shootout, 4-3 and was eliminated by No. 2 New England College in the New England Collegiate Conference tournament semifinals. The teams battled to a scoreless draw through 90 minutes of regulation and 30 more of overtime. The Mariners finish 6-10-1.

    College honors

    • MItchell freshman libero Julia Lent was named NECC Co-Defensive Player of the Year. Lent was also named to the All-NECC first team, where she and was joined by seniors Olivia DeLoach and Claire Binfield. Binfield was named to the NECC Sportsmanship team.

    • Mitchell senior defender Nick Ghirardi of Salem and East Lyme High, and sophomore midfielder Dylan Lucey of Lyman Memorial were named first team All-NECC in men’s soccer. Ghirardi was an All-NECC pick for the second straight year while Lucey led the Mariners with seven goals. In addition, freshman Jeremy Gibbs of Waterford as named to the NECC Sportsmanship team.

    • Stonehill College’s Jordan Malloy, a 2022 Bacon Academy graduate and two-time ECC cross country champion, was named Freshman of the Year in the Northeast Conference. Malloy placed ninth overall in 18:38.9 over 5K at the recent NEC Championships as Stonehill, a first-year Division I program, tied Central Connecticut for first before losing the tiebreaker. Malloy, who also earned All-NECC first-team honors with her top ten finish, was named NEC Rookie of the Week a record five times.

    "Jordan is a great addition to our team," Stonehill coach Karen Boen said in a release. "She is extremely coachable and a fantastic teammate. Many times, freshmen will struggle under pressure, but Jordan has risen to the occasion in every race she has run, regardless of the level of competition.“
