    Local roundup: CGA loses to WPI 30-24 in 2OT; Conn men reach NESCAC final on PKs

    New London – Hunter Carey’s one-yard touchdown run in the second overtime lifted WPI to a 30-24 victory over Coast Guard Academy in a New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference football game on Saturday.

    The game-winning score came after the Bears’ Finnegan Hall missed a 33-yard field goal to start the second OT session.

    The game was tied 17-17 after regulation. WPI (4-5, 2-3) took a 24-17 lead on the first possession of overtime when Issac Frederique threw a 25-yard touchdown pass to Jay Mezzo, but Coast Guard (3-6, 1-4) responded with Broock Desta catching an 11-yard TD pass from Joey Armentrout and Hall’s extra point tied the game.

    Armentrout also threw a 6-yard touchdown pass to James Patz in the fourth quarter while Finnegan added a 26-yard field goal and Spencer McMillion ran three yards for a touchdown in the second quarter.

    McMillion rushed for 120 yards on 36 carries while Armentrout carried 14 times for 92 yards and completed 20-of-41 passes for 171 yards. He was interecepted twice. Desta finished with 10 receptions for 102 yards and defensive back Logan Morris finished with 13 tackles (12 solo).

    The Bears finish their season next Saturday at rival Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point, N.Y.

    Men’s soccer

    • Jack Marvel converted the deciding penalty kick as eight-seeded Connecticut College advanced to the New England Small College Athletic Conference final by defeating No.2 Williams 5-4 in a semifinal shootout.

    The teams had played scoreless soccer through 90 minutes of regulation and 30 more of overtime. Conn, the reigning Division III national champion, will play for an automatic bid into the NCAA tournament on Sunday when it plays No. 3 Amherst in the noon final.

    The Camels made all five of their penalty kicks with Steve Yeonas, Nate Pilson, Augie Djerdjaj, Alex Robles and Marvel all converting from the spot. Goalie Peter Silvester made four saves during regulation and OT.

    H.S. football

    • Jacob Rand threw for a touchown. and ran for another as Valley Regional/Old Lyme defeated Stafford/East Windsor/Somers 29-24 in the Pequot Football Conference on Friday night. Nick Cox added a pair of receiving TDs for the Warriors (6-1), one from Rand and one from Grady LaCourciere, while Di’Angelo Jean-Pierre broke loose for a 67-yard touchdown run.

    • KinKade Rubino ran 15 yards for a touchdown on Griswold/Wheeler’s opening drive and the Wolverines went on to defeat Stonington 22-12 on Friday night. Rubino also kicked a 27-yard field goal for the Wolverines (3-4), who led 22-0 before Jayden Carter threw two second-half touchdown passes for the Bears (2-6), one to Coke Phelan (11 yards) and the second to Josiah Blackman (13).
