    Local roundup: Fitch boys ride fast start to win over Ledyard

    Ledyard — Fitch scored the game’s first 18 points and cruised to a 71-34 victory over Ledyard in an Eastern Connecticut Conference Division II boys’ basketball game on Saturday afternoon.

    Mikey Wagner scored 18 points, including five 3-pointers, for the Falcons (2-0, 2-0) while Lorenzo River added 13 points, five assists and five steals.

    Peyton Luther scored 13 points for the Colonels (0-2, 0-2).

    In other games:

    • Devan Williams scored 42 points as New London beat East Lyme in an ECC Division I game which was the season opener for both teams. SaVahn Warren had 19 points for New London, which outscored East Lyme 21-9 in the third quarter to take a 59-35 lead. Gavin O’Brien led East Lyme with 10 points.

    • Jacob Strain scored 20 points, including five 3-pointers, as Griswold pulled away in the fourth quarter for a 71-57 win over Bacon Academy in an ECC Division III game. Evan Merchant added 17 points, Christian Russell 13 and Jeff Souvenance nine points and 10 rebounds for the Wolverines (2-0, 2-0) while Luke Grimord scored a game-high 21 points for the Bobcats (0-2, 0-2) and Elijah Black finished with 15.

    • Luke Lowry made four 3-pointers and scored 31 points as Stonington cruised to an 83-48 ECC Division III win over Planfield. Rob Scavello added 14 points for the Bears (2-0, 2-0) while Aaron LoPresto finished with 13 and Alex DePerry 11.

    • Raheem Murray scored 30 points as St. Joseph outlasted NFA 69-65 in a non-conference game. Tony Williams made five 3-pointers and scored a game-high 32 points for the Wildcats (0-2) while Armanee Davis added 12 points and Edwin Santana 10.

    • Killingly defeated Waterford for the first time since 2008 with a 48-41 victory over the Lancers. Yianni Baribeau had 15 points and 10 rebounds for Killingly (1-1) while Juan Morel Jr. had nine points and 12 rebounds for the Lancers (1-1) and Evan Piotrowski and Parker Spencer each had nine points.

    • Old Lyme lost to Portland 71-45 in a Shoreline Conference game on Friday which was the Wildcats’ season opener. Calvin Monte had 16 points, Caden Monte scored 10 and Alex Olson had eight points for Old Lyme.

    H.S. wrestling

    • Killingly, with four individual champions, won the Lancer Invitational wrestling tournament at Waterford High School. Southington was second with 177 points while Waterford finished sixth (129), New London seventh (127) and Lyman Memorial/Windham Tech ninth (93).

    Lyman had the lone local champion as Cameron Sammarco pinned the Lancers’ Devon Powers in 2 minutes, 28 seconds in the 170-pound final. Nehemiah Czelusniak (132) added a second and Hunter Sanchez (120) at third for the Bulldogs.

    For Waterford, Powers and Lucas Gannotti (145) placed second, Zachary Ruest (182) was third and Titus Olson (126) and Bradeden Sollima (22) each finished fourth.

    New London had a pair of runner-up finishes by Kaiden Smith (220) and Henry Santana-Liriano (285) while Christian Ortiz (160) added a third and three Whalers placed fourth: Jose Negron-Ortiz (106), Masyn Smith (113) and Andy Martinez-Soliz (120).

    • East Lyme/Norwich Tech’s Brayden Soleau pinned all four of his opponents, including Fairfield Warde’s in the final, to win the 180 title at the Guilford Invitational. Warde won the tournament with 255 points while EL/NT was eighth (113.5), Ledyard 11th (69) and Fitch 12th (62).

    For the Vikings, Jeremiah Irizarry (126), Lincoln Carlson (160) and Jonathan Harms (195) added third while Gianno Pearson (113) and Lukas McKusick each placed fourth. Tatianna Irizarry (106) was second for the Colonels with Ryan Taggart (138) placing third and Wyatt Crawford (195) finishing sixth, while Fitch was led by the runner-up finish by Naszier Matthews (285) and a fourth by Luca Ursini (138).

    • Norwich Free Academy went 2-1 during a quad-meet at Montville, losing to reigning Class S champion Haddam-Killingworth 42-39 while defeating Montville 57-18 and Griswold/Wheeler 43-42. Edward Lavoie (126), Jackson Sorel (132) and Brenden Vine (220) each went 3-0 for the Wildcats (3-1).

    Men’s basketball

    • Dev Barnum had 20 points and nine rebounds in UConn Avery Point’s 98-49 loss to Quincy College. Terrell Gardner added 15 points and nine rebounds for the Pointers, who are now idle until Jan. 12.

    Women’s basketball

    • Jakara Murray-Leach made a late 3-pointer to give Albertus Magnus an 87-86 victory over Mitchell College. Amina Wiley led the Mariners (3-6) with season highs of 32 points and 25 rebounds while Jermia Dumas added 15 points, Dede Stevenson 12 and Yasmine Santos 11.

    Boys’ fencing

    • NFA swept an ECC tri-meet against Bacon Academy and Waterford. The Wildcats beat Waterford 7-2 in foil while defeating the Lancers 6-3 and Bacon 9-0 in epee. Waterford beat Bacon 7-2 in epee.

    Girls’ fencing

    • Waterford swept foil and NFA epee during an ECC tri-meet that included Bacon. In foil, Waterford beat NFA and Bacon by 7-2 scores with NFA beating Bacon 6-3. In epee, NFA edged Waterford 5-4 and beat Bacon 8-1 while Waterford beat the Bobcats 9-0.
