    Local roundup: Day Holiday Classic at Mohegan Sun on Monday

    The Day Holiday Classic boys’ basketball tournament is on Monday at Mohegan Sun Arena.

    The event begins with a game between East Catholic of Manchester and Notre Dame of West Haven at 4 p.m. Game 2 features St. Bernard and Daniel Hand of Madison, and is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m.

    Eastern Connecticut Conference Division I opponents Norwich Free Academy and New London will play at 8 p.m., in the third and final game of the event.

    In other games:

    • Wheeler lost to Old Saybrook 58-51 in its season opener on Saturday. Kyle Kessler had 15 points and four assists, Keith Zardies scored 12 with three assists and Zane Brewer had 10 points and three rebounds for Wheeler. Aaron Tovle scored 25 for Old Saybrook.

    Men’s basketball

    • Coast Guard lost to Fairfield 86-45. Declan Rooney led Coast Guard (2-7) with 12 points, five rebounds and four assists.

    Women’s basketball

    • Bryant took a 54-19 halftime lead and went on to beat Mitchell College 108-43. Amina Wiley led Mitchell (3-7) with eight points.

    • Coast Guard lost to Puget Sound 94-74 in the Pacific Northwest tournament on Saturday night in Tacoma, Wash. The Bears (3-6) were led by Washington native Kira Wood and her game-high 27 points. Dorothy Stotts had 19 points, Jacqueline Ward scored 11, Lily Mika had 10 points and Julia Mann had seven rebounds for the Bears.

    H.S. hockey

    • Defending Division III champion Newington beat the Eastern CT Eagles 7-3 on Saturday night. Owen Pazzaglia of East Lyme and Nick Rembish of St. Bernard had a goal and an assist each, Declan York of Ledyard had a goal, Fitch’s Gavin Casagrande had an assist and East Lyme’s Cam McCollum made 25 saves for the Eagles (0-2).

    H.S. fencing

    • St. Bernard swept four matches from Fitch on Saturday. The Saints won 5-4 in girls’ foil, 6-3 in boys’ foil, 5-4 in girls’ epee and 5-4 in boys’ epee.
