    H.S. roundup: Valley/Old Lyme’s D’Angelo Jean-Pierre named PFC Sassacus Player of the Year

    Valley Regional/Old Lyme’s D’Angelo Jean-Pierre, who help lead the Warriors to the championship game of the CIAC Class SS football playoffs earlier this month, was named Pequot Football Conference Sassacus Division Player of the Year on Tuesday.

    Jean-Pierre, a senior, started at wide receiver and defensive back for the cooperative program, which went 11-2 and lost to Barlow in the title game. He was also named the the PFC Sassacus Division All-Star team as a wide receiver.

    Also representing the Warriors on the all-star team were running back Jacob Rand, offensive linemen Adam Metz and Sam Bourez, defensive lineman Max Novak, linebacker Joe Montazella and defensive back Nick Cox.

    Boys’ basketball

    • Wheeler outscored Montville 23-7 in the fourth quarter to complete a wild comeback in the first round of the Grasso Tech Winter Tournament in Groton. The Lions (2-2) trailed 22-5 after one quarter and 49-41 after three before pulling out the victory. Kyle Kessler had 27 points for Wheeler while Keith Zardies added 13, Jayson Krysiewicz 10 and Deondre Bransford had five points and 17 rebounds. Anthony Barbuto scored 18 points and Lebron Maurice 17 for Montville (0-3).

    • Wheeler will play East Haven in Thursday’s 6 p.m. final after the Yellow Jackets beat host Grasso Tech 59-48 in the second game. Grasso and Montville will play in the consolation at 4 p.m. Charis Johnson had 12 points and four steals for the Eagles (0-2) while Caleb Brennan and Tito Aria finished with 10 points apiece.

    • Stafford pulled away in the second half for a 55-46 win over Bacon Academy in the opening round of the Norwich Tech Holiday Classic. Bacon will play Norwich Tech in Thursday’s consolation game. Luke Grimord scored 14 points to lead the Bobcats (0-4) while Elijah Black made four 3-pointers and finished with 12.

    • Jeff Souvenance had 20 points and 12 rebonds to lead unbeaten Griswold to a 62-51 victory over East Lyme. Evan Merchant added 17 points for the Wolverines (5-0) while Michael Strain finished with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Gavin O’Brien scored 17 ponits for the Vikings (2-2), who led 25-24 at halftime.

    • Ridgefield handed St. Bernard its first loss, cruising to a 72-42 non-conference win at home. The Saints (4-1) were led by Cedrick Similien with 13 points.

    Girls’ basketball

    • Middletown improved to 4-1 with a 64-55 non-conference win over Norwich Free Academy. The Wildcats (0-4) were led by Emily Orcutt with 11 points and six rebounds while Aislinn Richmond added 10 points and six rebounds and Naiya Stone-McClellan finished with 10 points and five rebounds.

    • Marissa Nudd scored 21 of her 29 points in the first half, tying her career high, as Bacon Academy remained unbeaten with a 55-34 non-conference win at Manchester. Nudd also had eight rebounds for the Bobcats (4-0), who led 15-4 after one quarter, while Elizabeth Glover added 16 points, Cara Shea had nine points and Alannah Baehr eight.

    • Jenny Lopez had 23 points, five steals and four assists to highlight Lyman Memorial’s 55-21 win over Westbrook. Phoebe Carpenter added 11 points, 10 rebounds and two blocks for the Bulldogs (2-3) while Kassidy LaTour finished with 10 rebounds, four steals and six blocked shots.

    Wrestling

    • Consecutive pins by Naim Wallace (145 pounds), Thomas Brunelli (152) and Hayden Anderson (160) highlighted NFA’s 58-24 victory over Ledyard. Jaiden James (120), Jackson Sorel (132), Brenden Vine (220) and Jesse Tingley (285) also had pins for the Wildcats (5-1), while Edward Lavoie earned an 11-1 major decision at 126. Ryan Taggart (138) and Wyatt Crawford (195) had pins for the Colonels (1-2).
