    Local roundup: NFA gymnasts open season with two wins

    Franklin — Trinity Ambruso earned all-around honors with 36.65 points as Norwich Free Academy opened its gymnastics season by sweeping a tri-meet from Old Lyme and the East Lyme/Waterford co-op at Thames Valley Academy of Gymnastics.

    The Wildcats (2-0, 1-0 Eastern Connecticut Conference) finished with 128.46 points while Old Lyme (3-2) was second with 11.25 and East Lyme/Waterford (0-5, 0-2) was third with 101.5.

    Ambruso also had individual wins on vault (9.4), bars (9.25) and floor exercise (9.2) while Old Lyme’s Emily Looney who finished second in the all-around (36.3) added a win on the balance beam (9.4).

    NFA’s Allison Wojnar finished third in the all-around (32.1) and added thirds on bars (8.5) and the floor (8.7). NFA’s Sarah Fedeli added a third on vault (8.4) while East Lyme/Waterford’s Harley Pendleton was third on beam (8.5).

    H.S. swimming

    • Ethan Jones and Alex Startz won two individual events apiece as Waterford defeated NFA 75-61 in the ECC. Jones won the 100-meter freestyle (1:11.71) and 100 backstroke (1:17.79) for the Lancers (1-3, 1-1) while Startz captured the 200 individual medley and 100 butterfly (1:07.19). Daniel Girard (200 free, 2:41.27), Noah Westkott (50 free, 28.87) and Luke Westkott (diving. 151.55 points) also won events for Waterford while Anna Gosselin (400 free, 5:21.66) and Brendan Bezanson (100 breaststroke, 1:22.22) won events for the Wildcats in their season opener.

    Men’s basketball

    • Connecticut College remained unbeaten in the New England Small College Athletic Conference with a 58-52 win over Trinity. Cam Schainfeld had 13 points, Andrew Hartel and Billy Whelan scored 10 points each and Ben Rice had eight rebounds for Conn (12-4, 3-0).

    • St. Thomas More beat Bridgton 94-72. Louie Semona and Tyler Betsey scored 22 points each for the Chancellors.

    Women’s hockey

    • UConn beat Merrimack 4-2 in a Hockey East game which was the first game played in UConn’s Toscano Family Ice Forum in Storrs. Brooke Campbell, Coryn Tormala, Kathryn Stockdale and Kate Thurman scored goals and Camryn Wong had two assists for the Huskies (14-8-2, 8-7-2).

    • Conn College lost to Amherst 3-0 in a NESCAC game. Abby Wieczorek made 24 saves for Conn (7-3, 5-2).

    Women’s basketball

    • Conn College lost to Trinity 56-51 in a NESCAC game. Jaycie Rojik had 19 points and eight rebounds and Molly Cronin scored 11 for Conn (4-10, 0-3).

    College wrestling

    • No. 23 Coast Guard got five pins and beat WPI 45-6 in a New England Wrestling Association match. A.J. Pagliarulo (149 pounds), Danny Gibson (174), David McCullough (184), Coy Spooner (197) and Kevin Pandolf (285) had pins for the Bears (4-1).
