    Local roundup: Grasso Tech rallies past Norwich Tech in boys’ hoop

    Norwich — Charis Johnson had 26 points and five steals as Grasso Tech rallied in the fourth quarter to beat Norwich Tech on Friday night, 60-57, in a Connecticut Technical Conference Charter Oak East boys’ basketball game.

    Keron Wilson had 12 points and two steals and Caleb Brennan had six points, 12 rebounds and four blocks for Grasso (4-8, 4-1), which outscored the Warriors 18-10 in the final period. Kelvin Paulino Familia added six steals.

    Bradley Saint Louis scored 14 with 11 rebounds and six assists, Joshua Hanks had 15 points and five assists and Jack Gahrman had 12 points and five rebounds for Norwich Tech (3-10, 1-4).

    In other games:

    • JJ Robinson had 16 points, eight steals and eight assists as Fitch beat Bassick 63-59 in a nonleague game. Van Spruill had 17 points and 13 rebounds for Fitch (10-3). Peyton Green made a pair of 3-pointers in the first half as the Falcons built a 13-point lead.

    • Luke Lowry had 21 points, five assists, five steals and four rebounds as Stonington downed Plainfield, 63-30, in an Eastern Connecticut Conference Division III game. Stonington (6-8, 3-3) had 22 steals. Robbie Scavello had 12 points, five rebounds, five assists and four steals for Stonington (6-8, 3-3) and Aaron LoPresto had 11 points, five assists and three steals. Josh Lord added seven steals.

    Girls’ basketball

    • Angelica Tompkins scored 17 to power St. Bernard past Wheeler, 31-26, in an ECC Division IV game. The Saints are 8-5, 5-0. Marissa Perkins had 10 points and 10 rebounds for the Lions (3-9, 1-5) while Makayla Delzer added 11 rebounds.

    • Molly Crabtree scored 17 to pace Killingly past Waterford, 46-25, in an ECC Division III game. Laura Farquahar had 15 points for Killingly and Arianna Headen scored 12.

    • Ally Lacobellis scored 18 points for Williams School in a 38-24 loss to Wooster. Julie Cote and Melissa Puccio both scored their first baskets of the season for the Blues.

    • Plainfield beat Griswold 38-36 in an ECC Division III game on Thursday. Kierra Nielson had 10 points and 12 rebounds and Abby Matheson scored eight points for Griswold (3-9, 0-4).

    H.S. swimming

    • Albert Zhu won the 200 yard freestyle in two minutes, 6.15 seconds to help East Lyme past Waterford in an ECC meet, 92-62. Ken Chen took first in the 200 IM in 2:15.91 while Eric Wang (100 butterfly, 57.20), Connor Foerster (100 freestyle, 57.04) and Mingwen Duan (500 freestyle, 5:43.03) also were individual winners for the Vikings (3-1, 3-1).

    For the Lancers (1-5, 1-3), Noah Westkott won the 50 freestyle (25.91), Luke Westkott captured the one meter diving (167.90) competition and Ethan Jones took first in the 100 backstroke (1:07.07).

    H.S. gymnastics

    • Trinity Ambruso finished first in the vault, bars, beam and floor as well as the all-around with a score of 36.3, lifting Norwich Free Academy past South Windsor, 121.55-81.95. The Wildcats improved to 3-2.

    • Stonington split an ECC tri-meet on Thursday, beating Killingly 131.9-130.2 but losing to Woodstock Academy (133.3). Lydia Laskey of Stonington (9-3, 3-1) won the floor exercise (9.55), tied for first on the balance beam (9.3) and was third in all-around at 35.05.

    Mary Lord of Stonington and Laskey tied for fourth in vault (8.5) and Laskey was third in bars (9.0). Olivia Aleman of Woodstock won all-around (37.05) and vault (9.2) and Ella Pereira of Killingly won bars (9.3).

    H.S. wrestling

    • Montville picked up three pins and beat Bacon Academy 45-24 in an ECC Division III meet on Thursday. Karla Flores (113 pounds), James Linder (138) and Luke Chapman (145) got pins for Montville (6-10, 2-2) and teammates Keegan Ingle (120), Christian Hall (126) and Hector Aponte (182) also won their matches.

    Michael Krol (152), Carson Brown (160) and Jonah Brownson (170) had pins for Bacon (3-16, 1-3).

    Men’s basketball

    • Tyler Betsey contributed 24 points and seven rebounds for St. Thomas More in a 90-77 loss to Hoosac School.

    • UConn junior Andre Jackson was selected to the Naismith Defensive player of the year watch list. He’s one of 15 players to make the list that also includes Creighton’s Ryan Kalkbrenner.

    Women’s basketball

    • Rebecca Oberman had 23 points, four rebounds and two steals as Conn College edged Bowdoin, 60-56, in a New England Small College Athletic Conference game. Molly Cronin had 13 points, six assists and two steals for Conn (7-11, 1-4) and Jaycie Rojik had 10 points, seven rebounds and three steals.

    Men’s hockey

    • UConn beat Yale, 6-1, in the opening game of the CT Ice Tournament at Quinnipiac. Justin Pearson had a goal and an assist against his former team and Matthew Wood had a goal and two assists for the Huskies (16-7-3), which will play the winner of the Quinnipiac in Saturday’s final at 7 p.m. Yale fell to 3-13-4.

    • Zach Whitehead scored twice for Middlebury in its 5-1 win over Conn College. Brett Moccia scored an unassisted goal for Conn (2-13).

    Women’s hockey

    • Caroline Keefe scored for Conn College as it tied Middlebury, 1-1. Rylie Griffith had the assist for Conn (8-7) and Abby Wieczorek had 34 saves.

    • UConn rallied from a two-goal deficit to force overtime at Maine before falling, 5-4, in Hockey East action. Coryn Tormala, Kyla Josifovic, Claire Peterson and Jada Habisch each scored a goal for the Huskies, who dropped to 16-9-3 overall, 10-8-3 in league play.
