    Local roundup: New London boys’ basketball team wins its eighth straight

    New London ‒ New London ran its winning streak to eight with a 62-39 win over Ledyard in a boys’ basketball game on Monday night.

    Devan Williams had 17 points, Da’Shaun Phillips had 10 points, Xavier Goode scored nine and Richard Taylor and Jamel Hayslett had eight points each for the Whalers (12-2).

    James Green had 13 points, Liam Stahlbush scored 10 and Peyton Luther had nine points for Ledyard (1-13).

    In other games:

    • Thomas Dreibholz scored 21 points to lead Killingly to a 64-31 win over Lyman Memorial. Yianni Baribeau had 18 points and 12 rebounds and Johnny Kazantzis scored 14 for Killingly (9-4). Jaiden Lopez led Lyman (9-6) with 13 points and Kevin Botticello scored 12.

    H.S. girls’ basketball

    • Jada Cheung scored 22 points as Montville beat Tourtellotte 45-31. Ava Collins had 13 points for Montville (2-12).

    • Morganne Pineda scored 31 points to lead Portland to a 56-36 win over Old Lyme in a Shoreline Conference game. Ava Roth scored 18 points and Kanon Oharu had eight points for Old Lyme (1-13, 1-11).

    • Watkinson beat Williams School 40-14. Lucy Fader scored six points and Marlee Anselmi had three assists for the Blues (0-10).

    H.S. gymnastics

    • Old Lyme freshman Emily Looney captured all-around honors with a 37.3 in the Wildcats’ meet against Woodstock Academy and Killingly. Looney won the vault (9.3), won floor exercise (9.3), tied for second on bars (9.2) and was second on beam (9.6). Woodstock won with a score of 133.25, Killingly had 130.1 and Old Lyme scored 113.9. East Lyme/Waterford scored 78.3.

    • NFA’s Trinity Ambruso won all four events but Stonington beat the Wildcats 133.65-127.7 in an Eastern Connecticut Conference meet. Ambruso won all-around with a score of 36.9. She won the vault (8.9), bars (9.1), beam (9.8) and tied for first with Lydia Laskey of Stonington in floor exercise (9.1).

    Laskey was second in all-around (35.45) for the Bears (10-5, 4-3) as well as coming in second on bars and beam. Stonington’s Shay Burnside was second in vault and floor and teammate Mary Lord was third in each event. Sarah Fedeli of NFA (3-3, 1-3) tied for third in floor exercise.

    Women’s basketball

    • Sam McKenna scored 36 points as Mitchell College beat Anna Maria 89-68. Dede Stevenson had 17 points, Jermia Dumas scored 11, Yasmine Santos scored 10 and Amina Wiley had 12 rebounds for the Mariners (11-9).

    H.S. girls’ hockey

    • Woodstock Academy’s co-op beat the Fairfield co-op 2-1. Ellary Sampson scored and Keynila Hochard had a goal and an assist for the Centaurs (4-8-1). Ledyard’s Juliette Hammer and Wheeler’s Sophia Gouveia had assists for Woodstock.

    H.S. wrestling

    • Hoshena Gemme of Old Lyme and Kayla Navarro from the Griswold/Wheeler co-op both placed second at the Queen of the Mat tournament on Sunday at Foran. Navarro was runner-up at 235 pounds for Griswold/Wheeler, which placed 13th with 26 points. Gemme finished second at 114 for Old Lyme, which finished 20th (18.5). New Britain won the team title (89).

    H.S. fencing

    • Ben Tan and Caleb Haylon both finished 6-0 as East Lyme went 2-0 in the boys’ foil in a quad-meet against Griswold, Ledyard and Old Lyme on Saturday. Jerson Suarez went 5-1 in the epee for Ledyard, which finished 2-0 in that discipline and 1-1 in the foil. Old Lyme’s Mark Burnham also went 6-0 in the epee.

    In the girls’ meet, Madeline Anderson, Kaitlyn Crowell and Cora Muschinski helped East Lyme beat Ledyard in the epee and foil while Old Lyme’s Sarah Burnham went 6-0 in the epee.

    College honors

    • UConn women’s basketball junior forward Aaliyah Edwards was named the Big East Player of the Week after helping the Huskies to a 3-0 week. Edwards averaged 20.3 points, 7.7 rebounds, 3.0 assists and .564 shooting. This season, Edwards is averaging 17.4 points and 9.1 rebounds per game. This is the second time this season that Edwards has won the award.

    • UConn women’s basketball junior Nika Mühl was named one of 10 candidates for the 2023 Nancy Lieberman Award, as announced by the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame and the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association. The award recognizes the top point guard in women’s NCAA Division I college basketball and is named after Hall-of-Famer Nancy Lieberman.

    Mühl, the Zagreb, Croatia, native leads the nation with 8.8 assists per game and 184 total assists. UConn ranks second nationally with 20.6 assists per game. Mühl set the UConn single-game record with 15 assists vs. NC State on Nov. 20. She also leads the Huskies with 32 steals.

    Five Huskies have won the Nancy Lieberman Award a total of nine times: Sue Bird (2000, '01, '02), Diana Taurasi (2003, '04), Renee Montgomery (2009), Moriah Jefferson (2015, '16) and Paige Bueckers (2021).

    • Abby Wieczorek, the senior goalie for the Connecticut College women’s hockey team, was named the New England Small College Athletic Conference Player of the Week. Wieczorek made 54 saves in two games as the Camels went 1-0-1. She finished the week with a 0.96 goals against average and .964 save percentage.

    • Mitchell College senior guard Alfonzo Stokes was named the New England Collegiate Conference Player of the Week in men’s basketball. He averaged a team-high 19.0 points per game as the Mariners went 2-0. Stokes also averaged 7.0 rebounds per game. He also became the sixth player to reach the 1,000-point career mark in the school’s Div. III era.

    • Mitchell senior forward Amina Wiley was named the NECC Player of the Week in women’s basketball. She averaged 19.0 points and 11.5 rebounds in two games as the Mariners remained undefeated in conference play.

    Ledyard’s Collin Wiltshire was named the Little East Athlete of the Week in men’s track., Wiltshire, a senior at Eastern Connecticut State, is the defending LEC indoor and outdoor triple jump champion. He broke his own indoor record with a winning jump of 47-9 (14.55m) in a field of 13 participants at the non-scoring Wesleyan University Indoor Invitational Saturday. The jump is the longest this year in the LEC.
