Courtney Williams leaves Sun for Sky
The Connecticut Sun lost another starter to free agency as guard Courtney Williams signed with the Chicago Sky. She averaged 27.9 minutes, 11.1 points and 4.6 rebounds over 34 regular season games for the team last season.
Williams’ departure continues what has been one of Connecticut’s most chaotic offseasons in its history. It traded 2021 WNBA MVP Jonquel Jones, at her request, to the New York Liberty on Jan. 16. That same day it sent long-time starting point guard Jasmine Thomas to the Los Angeles Sparks. It leaves the Sun with just two starters from last season’s rotation under contract — DeWanna Bonner and Alyssa Thomas.
Post Brionna Jones, Connecticut’s sixth woman and second-leading scorer last season (13.8 ppg, 5.1 rpg), is a free agent but was cored by the team, giving it exclusive negotiating rights.
Guard Natisha Hiedeman is also a restricted free agent. She took over as the Sun’s starting point guard six games into last season after Jasmine Thomas suffered a season-ending knee injury.
Curt Miller also left the Connecticut in October after seven seasons as its head coach to take the same position with the Los Angeles Sparks. He, Jonquel Jones, Jasmine Thomas and Williams were key to the team reaching the WNBA Finals in 2019 and 2022.
