    Local roundup: CGA softball now 4-0 after another sweep

    Kissimmee, Fla. — Coast Guard Academy approved to 4-0 by defeating Marian 5-4 and Catholic 3-2 in a softball doubleheader on Monday.

    The Bears won the opener against Marian in dramatic fashion. They trailed 4-1 in the bottom of the seventh Katie Becker singled home a run and Maura Murphy had a bases-clearing, game-ending three-run triple.

    In the second game, Coast Guard also trailed, this time 2-1, when Maria Dewey hit a two-run homer in the top of the fourth to give the Bears the lead for good.

    Starting pitcher Isabelle Shroyer did the rest, blanking Catholic over the final five innings to earn the win. She allowed only five hits and struck out four.

    College indoor track

    • Three members of the Connecticut College men’s indoor track and field team were added to the field for this weekend’s NCAA Division III Championships in Birminghan, Alabama. Senior Jeffrey Love will compete in the 3k and 5k races, senior Matt Carter will run with Love in the 5k and junior Chris Koskinen qualified in the pole vault.

    Love is seeded 14th in the 5k and 16th among in the 3k while Carter is the No. 12 seed in the 5k. Kostinen is seeded 12th in the pole vault and holds the school record (4.95 meters).

    College honors

    • St. Thomas Aquinas (N.Y.) sophomore guard Sarah Ericson, the ex-NFA star, was recently named the East Coast Conference Player of the Year in women’s basketball. Ericson, who was named the ECC Rookie of the Year as a freshman, also earned made the all-conference first team after averagin 12.5 points, 9.9 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 2.0 steals per game and led the ECC in rebounding despite being only 5-foot-7.

    The Spartans (21-7), who lost to Daemen University (N.Y.) in the conference tournament final, received an at-large bid into the NCAA Division II tournament on Sunday. They are seeded seventh in the eight-team East Region and will play No. 2 Southern New Hampshire on Friday in the first round at Assumption College in Worcester, Mass.

    • UConn first baseman Ben Huber was named Big East Player of the Week in baseball. The graduate student led the Huskies to a three-game sweep at Florida Atlantic, batting .500 (6-for-12) with two doubles, four runs, four RBI and 2-for-2 in steal attempts.
