    Local roundup: No. 5 Wheeler boys reach Division V quarters with 55-51 win over Stafford

    North Stonington — Deondre Bransford scored 18 points and had seven rebounds as fifth-seeded Wheeler beat No. 21 Stafford 55-51 in the second round of the CIAC Division V boys’ basketball tournament on Wednesday.

    The Lions (17-6) play at No. 4 Portland in a quarterfinal on Friday at 7 p.m. Portland beat No. 20 Wolcott 67-46.

    Zane Brewer had 11 points and four rebounds, Keith Zardies scored 10 and Bransford had four assists and four steals for Wheeler.

    Zack Donovan led Stafford with 15 points.

    H.S. diving

    • Waterford’s Luke Westkott finished sixth at the CIAC Class S diving championships. Westkott finished with 318.80 points. Asa Bannerman of Northwestern Regional won with a score of 408.25.

    Sun schedule update

    • The WNBA announced its national broadcast schedule and the Connecticut Sun will appear four times. Two are home games: July 9 vs. Washington at 3 p.m. and Aug. 1 vs. Minnesota at 7 p.m. (both on ESPN), and two are on the road: July 1 vs. Las Vegas at 3 p.m. (ABC) and July 22 vs. Atlanta at 1 p.m. (ESPN). The ABC game can be view locally on WTNH (Ch. 8).

    Men’s lacrosse

    • Mitchell College lost to Regis 14-3. Weston Schumacher scored three unassisted goals for the Mariners (0-5).

    • JJ Ford had four goals and an assist to as Connecticut College defeated UMass Boston 17-6 on Tuesday night. Jared Rainville had two goals and two assists for Conn (1-1) and Liam Horkan scored three times.

    Women’s lacrosse

    • Mitchell opened the season with a 20-2 loss to Saint Joseph. Lauren Cordero and Jessica Krupnikoff scored goals for the Mariners.
