Local roundup: Saints finish third in final GameTimeCT.com boys’ basketball poll
St. Bernard, fresh off its victory 63-50 victory over Staples in Sunday’s CIAC Division II championship game at Mohegan Sun Arena, finished third in the final GameTimeCT.com boys’ basketball state poll released on Tuesday.
The Saints, who finished 25-3, received 480 votes and jumped all the way up for eighth in the final regular season poll. Staples, which was unranked, wound up 10th.
East Catholic, which defeated Northwest Catholic 49-47 to win the Division I state title, was the unanimous No. 1 choice. The Eagles (27-1) received all 19 first-place votes and finished with 570 points. NW Catholic (21-4) finished second with 514 points.
New London (20-6), which lost to Bloomfield in the Division II semifinals, was the only other local team to receive votes (16).
The final girls’ basketball poll, also compiled by GameTimeCT.com, is expected to be released on Wednesday.
• Mitchell College erupted for 21 hits in its return home from Florida, routing Bridgewater State 17-1 in a non-conference game. Winning pitcher Chris Gibbs allowed only one run and six hits over seven innings for the Mariners (9-3) while Old Lyme’s Eddie Kaftan and Jacob Quiles each pitched a scoreless inning in relief.
New London’s Lelo Martinez and East Lyme’s Owen Robbins had four hits apiece for Mitchell while Matt Falk and Bo Yaworski each homered, Yaworski’s coming during a 10-run seventh inning outburst.
• Connecticut College rolled to a 7-2 win over Wheaton College, winning five of the six singles matches in straight sets. The Camels (3-4) picked up singles wins from Walker Mulligan, Andy Feldman, James Serhant III, Gavin Anderson and Krishh Tipnis.
• Conn College won its fourth straight match with an 8-1 win over Wheaton. The Camels (5-2) swept all three doubles matches and picked up singles wins from Caitlin Cass, Sana Bhat, Courtney Banks, Lily Kerchasky and Carolina Champa.
