    Local roundup: Martinez powers Mitchell baseball to doubleheader sweep

    Quincy, Mass. — New London’s Lelo Martinez had two hits, including an inside-the-park grand slam, with five RBI in the second game of Mitchell’s 12-1, 12-1 sweep over Eastern Nazarene in a New England Collegiate Conference doubleheader on Saturday.

    Justin Adorno went 3-for-4, including two doubles, with two runs and an RBI and Matt Falk hit a three-run home run and scored twice in the nightcap for the Mariners (16-3, 4-0).

    In the opener, Montville’s Dougie Delacruz went 2-for-3, including a double, with four RBI and two runs, Bo Yaworski had two hits, including a double, with three runs and an RBI and Martinez hit a two-run home run with four RBI.

    In other games:

    • Dominic Freeberger had two hits, including a three-run home run, with four RBI and two runs as UConn routed Maryland Baltimore County, 11-2. Jake Studley had two hits, including a three-run home run, and scored twice for the Huskies (19-6) while Matt Garbowski had a single, two runs and an RBI.

    Men’s lacrosse

    • Gaige Kruger had five goals and three assists as Coast Guard scored the game’s first seven goals in a 16-5 win over Wheaton in a New England Men’s and Women’s Athletic Conference contest. Waterford’s Caleb Holdridge had a goal and three assists, Taylor Gustafson had two goals and two assists and Ryan Flynn and Ryan Hunter both had two goals and an assist for the Bears (4-5, 1-1).

    • Jared Rainville had three goals and two assists as Conn College beat Colby, 13-8, in a New England Small College Athletic Conference game. Jason Fastiggi and JJ Ford both scored three times, Patrick Atkins had a goal and an assist and Will Rice had 16 saves for Conn College (4-3, 2-2).

    • James Weinbaum had four goals and five assists for Manhattanville in its 26-4 win over Mitchell. Weston Schumacher had a goal and an assist for Conn (0-8) and Dylan Kinsella and Jon Parra-Tobey both scored.

    Women’s lacrosse

    • Sarah Skurat had four goals and an assist as Coast Guard downed Wellesley, 15-1, in a NEWMAC game. Gianna Cascio had a goal and four assists, Abby McAllister had three goals and an assist and Caitlyn Coates and Riley Shipman both scored twice for the Bears (7-3, 3-0), which led 10-0 at halftime. Dylan Park and Laine Weber each added a goal and an assist.

    • Daniella Holland scored six times as Mitchell celebrated Senior Day with a 15-6 win over Wells. Jessica Krupnikoff had a goal and two assists, Rachel Ricciuti had two goals and an assist and Montville’s Abby Rasmussen had two goals for Mitchell (4-4). Hannah Gomes of Groton added six saves.

    • Ally Franz had six goals and two assists as Colby beat Conn College, 18-6, in a NESCAC game. Kate Coughlin and Hannah Merritt had two goals for Conn (4-4, 0-4) and Emily Yorns added two assists.

    College softball

    • Aziah James hit a grand slam and scored twice as UConn routed Villanova, 10-1, in a Big East game that ended after five innings. Lexi Hastings hit a three-run home run for the Huskies (19-10) and Savannah Ring added an RBI single and scored twice.

    College track and field

    • Connecticut’s College Liz Freeman won the 3,000 steeplechase (11:58.66) while Erica MacSweeney won the triple jump (11-29 meters) at the Tufts Snowflake Classic. Trinity won the meet with 183 points and Conn was runner-up (87). Jeffrey Love won the 5,000 (14:39.18) in the men’s meet for Conn, which finished fifth (62). Tufts won the meet (118).

    High school crew

    • East Lyme’s boys’ and girls’ first varsity 8 teams won against Guilford. The team of Kaylyn Wojcik, Sarah Long, Darby Farragher, Gabby Gottschall, Sandra Kirvelevicius, Fiona Samuelson, Katie Whewell, Ava Mauri and Sara Muller finished in a time of 5 minutes, 12 seconds in the girls’ race. Jack Wojcik, Zane Cappon, Devin Minogue, Darius Kirvelevicius, Oliver McCoy, Kai Jolly-Ballantine, Aiden Minogue, Rowan Wilson and Jonathan Kwak combined to finish in a time of 4:42 in the boys’ race.
