    H.S. roundup: Griswold rallies from 10-2 deficit for 11-10 softball victory over Montville

    Griswold — Makayla Neilson doubled home Summer McLean in the bottom of the ninth inning as Griswold rallied for an 11-10 softball victory over Montville on Saturday in an Eastern Connecticut Conference Division III softball game.

    McLean, who also tripled and scored three runs, led off the inning with a single.

    The Wolverines (3-5, 1-1) overcame a 10-2 deficit by scoring four runs in the fifth inning and three in the sixth before forcing extra innings with a run in the seventh.

    Neilson finished with two doubles and three RBI for Griswold while Kierra Neilson, Naely Diaz and Cameron Williams added two hits apiece and winning pitcher Abby Matheson struck out 10.

    Taryn Feragne had two doubles and four RBI for Montville (1-8,1-2) while Ava Gero had a single, double and three runs and Amanda Corrice had two hits and scored twice.

    In other games:

    • Waterford won its third ECC Division I game of the week with a 7-1 victory over Fitch. Brielle Kenney pitched a three-hitter for the Lancers (7-2, 3-0), her only blemish a solo homer by Grace Cosmopoulos in the fourth. Cosmopoulos had two hits for the Falcons (4-4, 1-2). Grace Muti had a double, triple and two RBI for Waterford while Anna Dziecnny had two hits and scored three runs, Ava Waddington had two hits and an RBI, Charlotte Jessuck had a double and two RBI, Emilia Podeszwa had a triple and Melanie Martin, Paige Jessuck and Ava Majeski each drove in a run.

    • Norwich Free Academy rode the all-around performance of Hailey Smith to a 3-1 win over East Lyme in an ECC Division I game. Smith was the winning pitcher, allowing just four hits, and also had a double and solo home run for the Wildcats (7-2, 2-1). Leah Manke added a single and double while Zosia Hospod doubled home a run. Avery Stadler had two hits and drove in the lone run for East Lyme (4-4, 0-3).

    • Lindsey Houle pitched a two-hitter and struck out nine as Stonington defeated Windham 15-1 in an ECC Division III game. Cam Brown was 3-for-4 with a home run and three runs scored for the Bears (7-3, 3-0) while Madi Allard had two hits and scored three times and Bri Plew had two hits, two runs and two RBI.

    • Ledyard rolled to an 18-0 five-inning ECC Division II win over New London. Grace Bush had a big day for the Colonels (3-5, 1-2) with two doubles and seven RBI while Layla Lasisomphone had two hits and drove in three runs while winning pitcher Kara Manning did not allow a hit in three innings with no walks and five strikeouts. New London is 2-4, 0-2.

    • Kassidy LaTour pitched a two-hitter without walking a batter and striking out 11 as Lyman Memorial defeated Wheeler 7-0 in an ECC Division IV game. LaTour also had two hits for the Bulldogs (5-3, 3-0) while Rylee Benway led the way with three hits and two RBI. Morgyn Perkins had a double for Wheeler (3-4, 1-1).

    • St. Bernard erupted for 12 runs in the second inning and cruised to a 22-1 five-inning ECC Division IV victory over Putnam. Winning pitcher Kaitlyn Scribner allowed only three hits for the Saints (4-3, 2-1) while Alex Rose was 3-for-5 with four RBI and a run scored, Schribner was 3-for-4 with three runs and an RBI and Maeve Surprenant had two hits, three RBI and a run.

    Baseball

    • Junior Ruiz scored on a passed ball in the bottom of the seventh as New London won its first game with a 2-1 victory over Ledyard in an ECC Division II game at Dodd Stadium in Norwich. Derrel Mitchell went the distance for the Whalers (1-8, 1-1), striking out 11, and Eddie Torres stole home for New London’s first run. Will Clapper pitched well in defeat, striking out eight for the Colonels (0-9, 0-3). Earlier in the day, New London dropped a 9-2 decision to Pomperaug in a game also played at Dodd Stadium. In that loss, Torres singled and scored for the Whalers.

    • Griswold won its third straight game with an 11-8 nonconference win over Westbrook. Cory Smith had a big day for the Wolverines (5-5) earning the pitching while while going 3-for-3 with three runs scored, three stolen bases and an RBI. Jake Duthrie, Andrew Hardin and Sean Garvin each added doubles for Griswold.

    • Reis Whitfield’s RBI single in the bottom of the eighth inning lifted Grasso Tech to a 4-3 victory over Rockville on Friday. Jesus Sanchez went 2-for-4 for the Eagles while Reynaldo Hidalgo got the win in relief.

    Girls’ tennis

    • Izzy Ash and Katie Virtue rallied for a 1-6, 6-4, 6-0 win at No. 3 doubles as Fitch edged Waterford 4-3 in an ECC Division I match. The Falcons (4-2, 1-1) also picked up singles wins from Charlotte Beaulieu, Maddie Beaulieu and Fiza Shariff, while the Lancers (5-3, 1-2) got wins from No. 1 singles player Sarah Hage and the top two doubles teams of Sophia Sit-Hazel Siu and Kyra Tuckwood-Bri Kilcommons.

    • Ledyard’s doubles team of Marissa DePaul-Catrin Cassidy won their match in a third-set tiebreaker to highlight the Colonels’ 5-2 win over NFA. Sarah Bailey, Sarah Banach and Kyle Gill added singles wins for Ledyard (2-1) as did the doubles team of Lia Day-Shelby Morrison. Gabriella McLead was a singles winner for NFA (1-5) as was the doubles team of Carina Montero-Katie Lavoie.

    Boys’ volleyball

    • Glastonbury outlasted NFA 25-22, 25-18, 18-25 and 25-23. Paul Ericson had 25 assists, nine digs, two kills and an ace for the Wildcats (6-3) while Edwin Santana finished with 12 kills and 10 digs, Gage Hinkley 10 kills four digs and one ace and Keegan Johnston 21 digs and three kills.

    • NFA beat Wolcott Tech in five games on Friday night. Game scores were 25-16, 23-25, 25-15, 12-25 and 15-10. Johnston had 14 kills, 18 digs and three aces for the Wildcats while Jhon Lopez Choc added 25 digs and four assists and Ericson had 21 assists, six kills and three aces.

    Crew

    • East Lyme won the girls’ first varsity race during a meet against host Stonington and Farmington on the Mystic River. The Vikings were timed in 5 minutes, 32 seconds and featured coxswain Kaylyn Wojcik along with rowers Sarah Long, Darby Faragher, Gabby Gottschall, Sandra Kirvelevicius, Fiona Samuelson, Katie Whewell, Ava Mauri and Sara Muller. Stonington beat East Lyme in the girls’ varsity four and the Bears won the boys’ first varsity race.
