    H.S. tennis: Stonington girls edge Guilford 4-3 in matchup of reigning state champions

    Guilford — Stonington’s No. 3 doubles team of Gwen McGugan and Angelina Williams rallied from a 5-4 deficit in the second set to win 7-5 and clinch Stonington’s 4-3 girls’ tennis victory over Guilford on Tuesday.

    It was a matchup of two reigning state champions (Guilford in Class L and Stonington in Class M).

    The Bears (12-1) swept the doubles with the No. 1 team of Katya Snegovskikh-Lauren Buckley winning a second-set tiebreaker and sisters Marina and Misha Lewandowski winning easily at No. 2 doubles.

    Stonington’s other win came from Grace Duggan at No. 1 singles.

    In other matches:

    • St. Bernard swept the four singles matches to edge Windham/Windham Tech 4-3 in an Eastern Connecticut Conference Division III match. Carmela Rangel won a second set tiebreaker (7-4) to clinch the win for the Saints (5-8, 5-2), who also picked up wins from Sasha Manzione, Meri Kambolli and Blakey Murray.

    • Julia Mielguj, Charlotte Beaulieu, Maddie Bealieu and Fiza Shariff swept singles without losing a game as Fitch defeated New London 7-0. Izzy Ash-Ada Ellis won in three sets in No. 1 doubles for the Falcons (11-5) while Sophie Ash-Kelley Turley and Liz Henderson-Madison Porter also won. New London is 4-8.

    • Sarah Bailey, Sarah Banach, Claire Fenaughty and Kylee Gill swept the singles matches as Ledyard (11-3) defeated Lyman Memorial 7-0. The Bulldogs are 5-7.

    • Lyman Memorial defeated New London 7-0 on Monday, earning singles wins from Nina Gardella, Alexis Zimnoch, Emma Collins and Naomi Duhaime and doubles wins from Amelia Wenworth-Aria Nowosad, Kendall Breault-Skylar Hoffmann and Natalie Tingley-Teagan Wertz.

    Boys

    • Stonington did not lose a set in rolling to a 7-0 nonleague win over Old Lyme. Brady O’Neil, Matthew Turrisi, Chase Donnarummo and Jackson Conlon won singles matches for the Bears (13-1), as did the doubles teams of Conrad Tobiassen-Tucker Callahan, Sam Lund-Joshua Lord and Owen Grant-Peter Schoencker. Old Lyme is 14-3.

    • Ledyard finished off a perfect season in ECC Division II play with a 7-0 win over New London. The Colonels (9-7, 6-0) picked up singles wins from Ben Fieldsend, Ronan Allison, Hendrick Trieu and Clark Ysewyn along with doubles wins from Sebastian Fieldsend-Malloch Allison, Tyler Howard-Noah Freeman and Luke Anderson-Hunter Divincenzo. New London is 1-13, 1-5.

    • The No. 2 doubles team of Ethan Cummings-Adit Saharsrabudhe rallied for a 2-6, 7-5, 6-3 win to highlight East Lyme’s 6-1 win over Montville. Juarui Peng, Ajay Rena, Eric Lovering and Kenny Zheng added singles wins for the Vikings (10-2) as did the No. 1 doubles team of Rohan Purohit-Rohun Boopathy. Darren Chen-Ryan Hochdorfer won at No. 3 doubles for Montville (6-7).

    • Singles wins by Christos Matsas, Ian Balfour and Peter Colonis helped Waterford defeat Woodstock 6-1. The Lancers (7-6) also swept doubles behind the teams of Quinn LeBelle-Louis Dhervilly, Andrew Bertrand-Arthur Dhervilly and Adam Balfour-Colton Murch, with Bertrand-Dhervilly rallying for a 2-5, 6-4, 6-0 win.
