Local roundup: Dagles to receive Bob Casey Courage Award from CSMA

Southington — Paul and Ann Dagle of East Lyme have been named the recipients of the Connecticut Sports Media Alliance’s Bob Casey Courage Award and will be honored at the organization’s 81st Gold Key Dinner on Oct. 22.

The Dagles lost their 19-year-old son, Brian, to suicide in November, 2011, while he was a sophomore in college.

Since then, the Dagles opened the Brian Dagle Foundation, “dedicated to the healing of grieving adults as well as community education on suicide prevention and awareness.” The Dagles also organized the Lax2Live lacrosse initiative, speaking at 18 high school and college lacrosse games this season throughout southeastern Connecticut, recognizing Brian’s love of the sport while acknowledging the mental health challenges of student-athletes.

Ann is the president and executive director of the Brian Dagle Foundation, with Paul serving as vice president.

The CSMA also announced that The Day’s Vickie Fulkerson will be the recipient of the Art McGinley Award for meritorious service.

The five Gold Key recipients for 2023 include Waterford’s Jan Merrill-Morin, the former record-setting long distance runner, and former Norwich Free Academy coach and athletic director Gary Makowicki.

The Gold Key Dinner will be held beginning 2 p.m., Oct. 22, at the Aqua Turf Club in Southington. Tickets are $75 and are available by contacting CSMA president Tim Jensen of Patch Media Corp. at (860) 394-5091 or tim.jensen@patch.com.
