    Local roundup: Former Conn star Marcucci staying with Red Bulls

    Harrison, N.J. – The New York Red Bulls have signed former Connecticut College goalkeeper A.J. Marcucci to a new Major League Soccer contract, the club announced on Thursday.

    Marcucci, 23, has signed a new two-year contract through 2025 with an option for 2026 and 2027. He was drafted by the Red Bulls in the third round of the 2021 MLS SuperDraft and then signed for New York Red Bulls II on April 15, 2021. He signed his first MLS contract on Sept. 11, 2021. Marcucci has made 43 career appearances with NYRB II, where he has posted eight shutouts and made 154 saves. He ranks second in club history in saves, games played in goal and minutes played in goal.

    “We are excited to sign A.J. to a new contract to keep him at the club” said Head of Sport Jochen Schneider. “He has had a strong year within MLS NEXT Pro so far and we are excited to continue to see him grow with us.”

    Marcucci was a three-year starter for Conn, where he appeared in 54 career matches and only allowed 27 goals. He holds the school record for the most clean sheets in a career with 25. The West Chester, Pennsylvania, native was named to the NCAA All-America First Team by United Soccer Coaches and D3soccer.com in 2018, while also being named the 2018 New England Small College Athletic Conference Player of the Year.

    Sea Unicorns win

    • The Norwich Sea Unicorns scored four runs in the top of the third inning and went on to beat the Nashua Silver Knights 5-2 in a Futures Collegiate Baseball League game. Andrew Bianco (New Haven) hit a two-run homer for Norwich (15-11).

    Dean Ferrera (Fairfield) had three hits and Brennen Hyde (Nichols) DJ Perron (Rhode Island), Jayson Kramer (Mount St. Mary’s) and Joey Agar (Mount St. Mary’s) had two hits each for the Sea Unicorns.

    District 10 softball (10-12)

    • East Lyme/Salem beat Ledyard 13-1 on Wednesday. Hailey Fletcher was 2-for-2 and Lorelei Gronholm had a triple for East Lyme/Salem and Peyton Swanson was the winning pitcher. Ava Helone had the only hit for Ledyard.

    • Rayleigh Self was the winning pitcher and struck out nine as Groton/Mystic beat Montville 4-2 on Wednesday. Grace Rollins was 2-for-3 and scored the go-ahead run and Haley Sequara also scored in the top of the seventh for Groton/Mystic. Montville pitcher Isabella Kobyluck struck out 10.
