    H.S. cross country: NFA edges ECC Division I rival Fitch 26-31 and sweeps boys’ quad-meet

    Groton — Norwich Free Academy placed its top five runners in the top 10 to edge Eastern Connecticut Conference rival Fitch 26-31 on the way to a quad-meet sweep on Tuesday at Haley Farm.

    The Wildcats (5-0, 1-0) also defeated Griswold 20-39 and Wheeler 15-50 while the Falcons (3-2, 0-1) beat Griswold 20-41 and Wheeler 16-43. Griswold (1-4) beat Wheeler (1-3) 22-36.

    Griswold’s Tycen LaBelle was the individual winner in 17:06 followed by NFA’s Jesse Croteau (17:16) and Patrick Croughwell (17:28). Fitch took the next three spots with Ryan Dunning placing fourth (17:37), Kaiden Chandler fifth (17:49) and Evan Vitagliano sixth (17:51), but NFA’s Sawyer Barile finished seventh (17:52), Nicholas DeBartolo ninth (18:03) and Anthony DeBartolo 10th (18:04) to help the Wildcats earn the sweep.

    In other meets:

    • East Lyme swept swept a tri-meet at Rocky Neck State Park, defeating Woodstock Academy 19-42 in an ECC Division I meet and Montville 15-50. Woodstock beat the Wolves (0-4) 16-43. The Vikings (3-0, 1-0) were led by Sean McCauley, who broke the course record in 16:07. Nathan Bergman was third in 16:24, Matt Carrier fourth in 16:28, Jilali Benjdid fifth in 16:45 and Sam Leon sixth in 16:53 for East Lyme.

    • St. Bernard swept the top four spots and defeated Windham 17-44 in an ECC Division III meet. Colin Britner won the race for the Saints (2-1, 1-1) in 18:15 while Luke Dellacono was second (19:30), Maddox Roan third (19:47) and Rad Tanksley fourth (20:13).

    • Lyman Memorial defeated Stonington 15-50 by forfeit in an ECC Division III meet. Kellen Johnson won the race in 19:13 for the Bulldogs (1-1, 1-0) and Brady deCastro was second for the Bears (20:08), who only had four runners. Oliver Gatti (21:10), Hunter Sanchez (21:14) and Ryan Spellman (21:56) finished 3-thru-5, respectively, for Lyman.

    • Bacon Academy defeated Waterford 23-34 in an ECC Division II meet. Paul Boden was the individual winner for the Bobcats (1-2, 1-1) in 19:06 while Titus Olsen was second for the Lancers (0-3, 0-2) in 19:15 followed by Bacon’s Michaely Dickey (19:30), Waterford’s Xavier DelGrosso (20:05) and Bacon’s Carson Brown (20:06). New London’s Jamir Hall finished in 21:30.

    • Ledyard beat Killingly (ECC Division II), Putnam and Plainfield all by 15-50 scores in a quad-meet at Plainfield. Hayden Baber won in 18:49 for the Colonels (5-0, 2-0) and was followed by teammates Jackson Hill (18:57), Gabriel Huff (18:59), Antonio Soldato (19:16) and Steven Ives (19:53).

    Girls

    • Hazel DeLucia won individual honors and lifted Lyman Memorial to a 24-31 victory over Stonington in an ECC Division III meet. DeLucia won in 21:55 for the Bulldogs (1-1, 1-0) while Sylvia Hiltz placed third (23:37) and Kayla Osga was fourth (24:06). Peyton Vanderstreet finished second for the Bears (2-1, 1-1) in 22:27 while Molly Musselman was fifth (24:17) and Addison Labbe was sixth (24:41).

    • NFA rode a 1-2 finish by Karina Chan and Helen Muench to a quad-meet sweep at Haley Farm in Groton. The Wildcats (4-1, 1-0) defeated Wheeler 21-40, Griswold 15-50 and Fitch 18-39 in an ECC Division I meet with Chan winning in 21:39 and Muench finishing in 22:47. Wheeler (3-1), which edged Fitch 27-28 and beat Griswold 15-50, was led by Carissa Browne in third (22:10) while the Falcons (1-4, 0-2) also beat Griswold 15-50 as Alaina Campbell was eighth in 24:51. Riley Hobert was fourth in 22:49 for Griswold (0-5).

    • St. Bernard earned a 15-50 forfeit win over Windham in an ECC Division III meet. Helena Coury finished first for the Saints (3-0, 2-0) in 22:13 followed by Mia Klewin (22:30), Violet Kunka (25:18), Audrey Turner (26:57) and Shelly Wu (30:29).

    • Waterford swept the top four spots and cruised to a 19-36 win over Bacon Academy in an ECC Division II meet. Avery Maiese won the race in 20:25 for the Lancers (3-0, 2-0) and was followed by Ava Lee (21:58), Elle DiBuono (22:13) and Madison LaForte (22:22). Avery Anderson was fifth (22:54) to lead Bacon (1-2, 0-2) and Olivia Crane-Benjamin finished in 24:37 for New London.

    • Ledyard remained unbeaten by defeating Killingly (Division II), Putnam and host Plainfield all by 15-50 scores. Kate Littler set a course record time of 22:47 to lead the Colonels (5-0, 2-0) and was followed by teammates Josephine Withbroe (23:11), Ella Stephenson (23:13), Samantha Doran (24:34) and Fionna Woody (24:45).

    • Aranza Torres (20:42) and Maya D’Aquila (21:19) finished 1-2 as host East Lyme swept a tri-meet at Rocky Neck State Park, defeating Woodstock 23-36 in ECC Division I and Montville 15-50. Montville also lost to Woodstock 15-50. Izzy Paggioli added a fourth for the Vikings (3-0, 1-0) and Allison Caskey was sixth (23:14) while Sage Gressly finished seventh (23:23) for the Wolves (0-4).
