    Local roundup: Old Lyme’s Gilbert cruises to Shoreline girls’ cross country title

    Madison — Old Lyme’s Chase Gilbert put on an impressive display in winning her second straight Shoreline Conference girls’ cross country championship on Tuesday.

    Gilbert, a sophomore, cruised the 5,000-meter course at Hammonasset Beach State Park in 17 minutes, 6.5 seconds — a minute faster than her 2022 winning time of 18:06 — and defeated runner-up Charlotte Behnke of Haddam-Killingworth by nearly two minutes.

    Behnke finished in 19:02.70 and helped the Cougars won the team championship with 34 points. Coginchaug was a distant second with 84.

    Old Lyme did not have enough athletes to compete for the team title, but senior Alexis Antonellis had a top 20 finish, placing 17th in 21:12.70.

    Gilbert will defend her Class S individual state next next Saturday (Oct. 28) at Wickham Park in Manchester.

    In the boys’ race, H-K also won the team title with 34 points and Old Saybrook senior Parker Cook was the individual champion, finishing in 15:45.20. Old Lyme placed seventh in the team race with 194 points and was led by Eric Dagher in 28th place (18:01) with Gabriel Tooker finishing 36th (18:45) and Simon Karpinski 37th (18:47).

    H.S. girls’ soccer

    • Norwich Free Academy took over sole possession of first place in Eastern Connecticut Conference Division I with a 2-1 victory over East Lyme. The Wildcats (10-2-2, 3-1) can win the title outright by defeating Woodstock and Stonington next week. Jordan Fabry scored both goals for NFA, the first by bending in a direct kick from the corner and the second on a header off a corner kick by Emily Tucker. The Vikings (10-4-1, 2-1-1) scored on an own goal off an NFA defender. Ava Boenig made 10 save for the Wildcats and Morgan Dube made 15 saves for East Lyme.

    • Goalie Victoria Sturm made four saves to post her ninth shutout of the season as Waterford defeated Ledyard 2-0 in an ECC Division II match. Camryn Dickinson, assisted by Payton Smith, gave the Lancers (11-1-2, 5-1) a 1-0 lead in the first half and Adyson Wiseman set up Paige Jessuck for an insurance goal in the second half. Maddie McLeod made 12 saves for the Colonels (2-9-2, 1-5-1).

    • Katie Pierce had two goals and two assists as Wheeler rolled to a 5-0 non-league win over Parish Hill. Mya Comeau added a goal and an assist for the Lions (7-6) while Valentina Corrigan and Ingrid Anderson each scored a goal.

    • Natalie Smith scored three goals to highlight Grasso Tech’s 7-1 win over Prince Tech in the Connecticut Technical Conference. Kylee Morrison, Kyra Cho, Aalyah Siguencia and Samantha Garcia each added one goal for the Eagles (6-7, 6-7).

    • Skylar Frost and Marlee Anselmi scored three goals apiece as Williams defeated Christian Heritage 7-0 on Wednesday. Brooke McLoughlin also scored for the Blues and goalie Natalie Boissevain recorded her fourth straight shutout.

    H.S. boys’ soccer

    • Goals by Eli Klusek and Colby Cowan lifted Montville to a 2-1 victory over Lyman Memorial in an ECC Division III game. Ben Godburn and Noah Keenan added assists for the Wolves (11-2-1, 7-0-1) and goalie Adonis Santiago made four saves. Cody Rahmann scored for the Bulldogs (4-10, 1-5) and goalie James Hiltz stopped eight shots.

    H.S. field hockey

    • Nora Walsh scored a pair of goals as Stonington inched closer to the ECC regular-season title with a 3-1 win over Fitch. The Bears (9-2-1, 9-0-1) can clinch things with a victory at NFA on Tuesday. Megan Harris also scored for the Bears, Olivia Duhig had an assist and goalie Hailey Allard made 11 saves. Ada Ellis, assisted by Sophie Kollar, scored for the Falcons (7-6, 6-4) and goalie Esme Carlebach made eight saves.

    • Keana Crisculo had two goals and an assists as reigning Class S champion North Branford defeated Westbrook/Old Lyme 6-1 in the Shoreline Conference. Megan Bache scored for W/OL (5-5-2, 3-5-2) while goalies Grace Vincent (14) and Abby Demers (1) combined for 15 saves.

    • Gracie Lloyd scored both goals as East Lyme defeated NFA 2-0 in an ECC match. The Vikings are 8-3-1, 8-1-1 while the Wildcats fall to 1-11-1, 0-10-1.

    H.S. volleyball

    • Ledyard rallied from a 2-0 deficit to defeat New London 3-2. Game scores were 22-25, 24-26, 25-12, 25-16 and 15-7. Emily Peckham had 31 assists for the Colonels (6-12) while Keara Opelenik had nine kills, Bella Schweitzer and Shyann McKeon had eight kills each, Ava Oliver had seven kills and Kylee Gill 17 digs. Nyarah Dudley had 26 digs and three kills for the Whalers (9-9) while Serenity Lancaster added 27 digs, 11 kills and nine blocks, Cashel Jones had 18 digs, three aces and 21 service points and Raelyn Lopez had 16 digs and seven assists.

    • Griswold rolled to a 25-17, 25-19 and 25-16 win over Fitch. Gretta Dombkowski had eight kills, five digs and three aces for the Wolverines (11-6) while Kierra Neilson finished with 11 kills, two blocks and nine digs and Ilah Marsh had four kills, one block, two digs and one assist. Abby Malone had five kills and two aces to lead the Falcons (5-11) while Katie Virtue had five kills, Bella Ditmore 14 assists and nine digs and Sage Overmeyer had eight digs.

    • Savannah Guernsey had 24 assists and 13 digs to highlight NFA’s 23-25, 25-8, 25-23 and 25-10 win over Ledyard on Wednesday night. Evelina Klyukin had added three kills and 18 digs, Stella Hogan had 11 kills and 17 digs and Petra Berry had four kills and five blocks for the Wildcats. while Shyann Mckeon had five kills, Keara Opelinik six kills, Kylee Gill had 23 digs and Emily Peckham had 13 assists for the Colonels.

    Women’s basketball

    • UConn senior Aaliyah Edwards has been named to the 20-player watch list for the 2024 Katrina McClain Award, presented annually to the nation’s top Division I power forward. Edwards was a finalist for the 2023 Katrina McClain award after a breakout junior season when she was named the Big East’s Most Improved Player and Tournament Most Outstanding Player. She was also named an AP and USBWA third team All-American after averaging career highs points (16.6), rebounds (9.0) and shooting percentage (58.9).
