    Local roundup: Camels lead from start to finish in win over Mount Holyoke

    New London — The Connecticut College women’s basketball team went 9-for-9 to start the game and coasted to a 75-33 victory over Mount Holyoke on Saturday in a nonconference matchup at Luce Field House.

    Conn (4-7) had 12 players in the scoring column, with Mia Xerras and Catherine Cole leading the way with nine each. Avery Burns and Aislinn McMahon came off the bench to add eight points apiece and Catie Donadio chipped in seven points and seven rebounds.

    The Camels never trailed, finishing with a season-high 26 points in the first quarter, and posted their largest margin of the victory of the season.

    Men’s basketball

    • Jaylyn Clardy finished with 19 points, 12 assists, five rebounds and two steals for Mitchell College as the Mariners picked up their first win of the season in a 76-63 victory over Pratt Institute. Robert Zirlis also produced a double-double for Mitchell (1-7) with 17 points and 13 rebounds, while Dontae Pollard added 16 points and nine boards and freshman Elijah Miller chipped in 11 points and eight rebounds.

    • Conn College overcame an 18-point second-half deficit to post a 63-53 victory over Baruch. In the first half, Baruch shot 61% percent, taking a 34-18 lead at the break. The Camels came back in the second half, outscoring the opponent 45-19, forcing eight turnovers and shooting 59%. David Murray finished with 16 points, 14 rebounds, five blocks and two steals for Conn (7-2), while Billy Whelan chipped in 12 points, Elias Espinosa 11 and Cam Schainfeld 10. Murray shot 7-for-9 from the floor and had six of the Camels’ nine offensive rebounds.

    Men’s hockey

    • Bowdoin scored three unanswered goals in the third period to beat Conn College 4-3. Conn led 3-1 in the third on goals by Logan Cleary, Steven Ardagna on a 5-on-3 power play and John Russo, but Bowdoin’s Jack Gilligan pulled the Polar Bears within 3-2, Luke Wheeler tied it with four minutes remaining and Michael Dinges connected for the game-winner with 1:40 to play. Will McEvoy had 28 saves for Conn (3-5, 2-4 NESCAC) and Sean Detloff had a pair of assists.

    H.S. girls’ hockey

    • Freshman Mia Auger had two goals, both within a minute of each other in the third period, as the Woodstock Academy co-op opened the season with a 3-2 defeat of Simsbury. Ellery Sampson also scored for Woodstock, while Sky Patterson of the Marine Science Magnet School and Stella Morrison of Ledyard added assists.

    H.S. fencing

    • New London’s Andrew Mendez was undefeated as the Whalers swept a pair of boys’ foil matches, topping Waterford (6-3) and Ledyard (6-3) in a tri-meet. Against Waterford, Mendez outscored his opponents by a total of 15-5 and against New London, Mendez combined with Ernsley Joseph for all six of the Whalers’ victories. Waterford defeated Ledyard 5-4, with Cameron Surprenant sealing the victory with a 5-4 win in the final bout. In boys’ epee, Waterford defeated New London 6-3 and Ledyard 8-1. Aidan DuPont and Charlie Morgan were undefeated for Waterford. Ledyard topped New London 6-3.

    In girls’ foil, Waterford’s Isabella Haque was undefeated in an 8-1 win over New London and teammate Tenzin Kyjong won all three of her bouts as the Lancers blanked Ledyard 9-0. New London’s Stephanie Flores-Aguilar was undefeated in a 6-3 victory over Ledyard. In girls’ epee, Waterford’s Maple Siu clinched a 5-4 win over Ledyard with a 4-3 victory. Ledyard and Waterford each defeated New London 9-0.

    • The St. Bernard boys finished undefeated, beating East Lyme 5-4 in foil and sweeping East Lyme (5-4) and Bacon Academy (8-1) in epee. Bacon edged East Lyme in epee 5-4. East Lyme’s girls defeated St. Bernard (5-4) and Bacon (5-4) in foil and topped St. Bernard (7-2) in epee. The Bacon girls edged St. Bernard 5-4 in foil, while St. Bernard defeated the Bobcats in epee (5-4).

    • The Fitch girls went undefeated in a tri-meet, topping Norwich Free Academy 6-3 in foil and sweeping a pair of matches in epee, 7-2 over Griswold and 5-4 over NFA. NFA edged Griswold 5-4 in epee. In boys’ foil, NFA beat Griswold (9-0) and Fitch (7-2) and the Wildcats also won a pair of matches in boys’ epee, beating Griswold (9-0) and Fitch (5-4). Fitch topped Griswold 6-3 in boys’ foil, while Fitch won against Griswold in epee, 9-0.
