    Local roundup: Stonington’s Mooney wins heptathlon for UConn at Husky Challenge

    Storrs — UConn freshman Josh Mooney, The Day’s 2023 All-Area Male Athlete of the Year, won the heptathlon Thursday and Friday at the Husky Challenge to kick off the indoor track season.

    Mooney scored an impressive 5,217 total points, winning the event’s 60 meters (6.98 seconds), long jump (6.68m), high jump (1.90m) and 60m hurdles (8.04 seconds). He was second in the shot put (12.7m), third in the pole vault (3.9m) and seventh in the 1,000 (3:00.06).

    Brian Fennelly of Holy Cross was second in the heptathlon with 4,789 points, followed by Luke Steimach of UMass Lowell with 4,766.

    Men’s swimming

    • Justin Finkel won the 200 butterfly (1:49.04), the 100 freestyle (46.94) and the 100 butterfly (50.22) to lead Conn College to a pair of wins Saturday, beating Trinity 209-88 and Roger Williams 197-91. Cam Bizjak (1-meter diving, 3-meter diving), Matthew Laclef (100 breaststroke, 200 backstroke) and Evan Lyons (200 freestyle, 200 individual medley) finished with two individual victories apiece for the Camels (3-0). Bizjak’s score on the 1-meter board was an NCAA Regional qualifying score, the first of two needed to reach the postseason competition.

    Women’s swimming

    • Rosemary Bonadies set the tone with for Conn College with a pair of victories and also contributed to a relay win for the Camels as they topped Trinity 179-115 and Roger Williams 223-57 Saturday. Bonadies won the 100 backstroke (59.49), the 200 back (2:08.99) and swam a leg of the winning 200 medley relay for Conn. Kate Edison, Stephanie Shawaryn, Jada Keen, Keira Haas and Hope Lane also won individual events for the Camels.
