    Local roundup: Devan Williams scores 1,000th point in New London’s win

    Windsor — Junior guard Devan Williams scored the 1,000th point of his career as the New London High School boys' basketball team defeated Bloomfield, 87-44, on Friday.

    Williams finished with a game-high 25 points for the Whalers (4-1). Sophomore forward Julius Washington (18) and freshman guard Cayden Simonds-Gaskin (16) also scored in double figures. New London held just a two-point lead at halftime (37-35), but outscored Bloomfield 28-5 in the third quarter to pull away.

    In other games:

    • East Lyme's Oliver Hibbard was named MVP of the Grasso Tech Holiday Classic after scoring 10 points to help the Vikings defeat the hosts, 68-32, in the championship game. Mike Timpano led all scorers with 18 points for the Vikings (4-1), and Brendan Osso added 13 points. Charis Johnson led the Eagles (2-2) with 10 points and was named to the All-Tournament team, along with Timpano and Jaylen Hannens for East Lyme, Jace Kobyluck for Montville, and Josh Wagner for Bolton. Grasso Tech's Amais Thompson earned the Charlie Miller Sportsmanship Award.

    • Montville held a 15-point halftime lead and cruised from there to hold off Bolton, 62-41, in the consolation game of the Grasso Tech Holiday Classic. Jace Kobyluck led all scorers with 35 points and 12 rebounds for the Wolves (2-4), and Izaiah Yard contributed to the win with 10 points.

    • Killingly beat Lyman Memorial 60-41. Johnny Kazantzis led Killingly with 23 points and Jordan Chandler scored 17 for Lyman (0-5).

    • Wheeler trailed by 11 at the half and couldn't recover in a 56-38 loss to host Morgan in the Morgan School Christmas Tournament final. Deondre Bransford led the Lions (3-2) with 16 points, and Zane Brewer added 14 points.

    Girls’ basketball

    • Griswold picked up its first win of the season, beating Norwich Tech 50-33. Natalie Becotte scored 16 and Abby Matheson had 15 points for the Wolverines (1-3). Lillian Luurtsema led Norwich Tech (2-4) with 10 points.

    • Fitch lost to Northwest Catholic 50-46. Dre’Ana Singleton had 15 points, Mariette El Khoury scored 14 and Gabby Dimock had 11 rebounds for the Falcons (3-4).

    • Norwich Free Academy came up just short against Mercy, losing 35-33. Sese Atchinson led the Wildcats (3-4) with nine points, and teammates Naiya Stone (eight points) and Nevaeh Yorke (seven points) also contributed.

    • Serenity Lancaster scored 19 points, grabbed 10 rebounds, blocked eight shots and had two steals in New London's 55-35 win over North Kingstown (R.I.) on the road. Nyarah Dudley (16 points, seven steals, six rebounds) and KyAni Allgood (nine points, eight rebounds, three steals, two blocks) also contributed for the Whalers (4-0), and Jaidelis Rivera had 10 points, seven assists and three steals.

    College women

    • Connecticut College returned from its exam break with a 62-50 non-conference road win against St. Joseph's-Long Island. The Camels (5-7) overcame 21 turnovers with a strong effort on the defensive end, finishing with 11 steals and five blocks while holding the Golden Eagles to under 30-percent shooting. Addi Hunter paced Conn with a season-high 20 points on 7-of-9 shooting and also grabbed 10 rebounds. Rebecca Oberman-Levine also recorded a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds, and Catie Donadio added 10 points off the bench.

    College men

    • Conn College shot 52 percent in the first half en route to a 19-point halftime, and eventually defeated Rochester Polytechnic Institute 68-52 in the opening round of the Utica University Classic. Elias Espinosa paced the Camels (9-2) with a career-high 24 points, including 6-of-12 from 3-point range. David Murray added 10 points and eight rebounds in the win. Conn will face the host Pioneers in the title game at 3 p.m. today.
