    Local roundup: Mangual (17 points) leads the way for St. Bernard boys

    Montville — Tyler Mangual finished with 17 points, including three 3-point field goals, as No. 6 St. Bernard defeated Norwich Free Academy 72-52 Friday night in a high school boys’ basketball game.

    Nazir Rembert and Amyre Gray had 12 points each for the Saints (8-2 overall, 4-0 Eastern Connecticut Conference Division I), who outscored NFA 21-6 in the second quarter to take a 37-21 lead at halftime.

    Camron Barboza had 14 points for NFA (3-5, 0-4).

    In other games:

    • Wheeler remained unbeaten in ECC Division IV with a 69-50 victory over Plainfield. Deondre Bransford had 22 points, 11 rebounds, three assists and three steals for Wheeler (7-2, 4-0) and Zane Brewer had 13 points and three assists. Kyle Kessler added 11 points and four assists. The game was tied 27-all at halftime before Wheeler took a 45-37 lead after three quarters. Brayden Marquis had 16 points for Plainfield.

    • Jordi Cassar had 20 points in Waterford’s 70-61 overtime victory in ECC Division II. The Lancers (5-3, 3-0) outscored Woodstock 13-4 in overtime for the victory. Parker Spencer added 17 points and five assists for Waterford and Sean Kramer had 12 points, five rebounds, three assists and a pair of blocks. Juan Morel had 13 rebounds and three blocked shots.

    • Killingly defeated Bacon Academy 68-44 in an ECC Division III matchup, getting double-doubles from Quinn Sumner (15 points, 13 rebounds) and Johnny Kazantzis (17 points, 10 rebounds). Julian Rodegher had a team-high 14 points for Bacon (2-6, 0-3).

    • Eddie Fiske led Old Lyme with 17 points in a 64-52 loss to Cromwell. Colman Curtiss-Reardon added 11 points and Leland Hine 10 for Old Lyme (6-3). Victor Payne led Cromwell with 25 points.

    • Nick Stavesky had 15 points for Grasso Tech in a 54-48 loss to Windham Tech. Charis Johnson added nine rebounds and five assists for Grasso (4-4).

    H.S. girls’ basketball

    • Gigi Colon had eight points in Grasso Tech’s 42-14 loss to Windham Tech. Grasso is 1-7.

    H.S. indoor track

    • Chris Morth, who was hired as head coach for the East Lyme boys’ indoor track program earlier this year, was named outdoor track coach Friday, taking over both roles from longtime coach Steve Hargis, who retired.

    “East Lyme is very fortunate to have coach Morth continue leading our boys’ track team in the spring. The continuity of his presence in the fall with cross country (assistant coach), in the winter with indoor track and now with outdoor track will only help our student-athletes reach their full potential,” East Lyme athletic director Kevin Marcoux said.

    East Lyme is the defending Eastern Connecticut Conference champion in indoor and outdoor track and cross country as well as the 2023 Class M state champion in indoor track and the Class MM winner in cross country.

    • Fitch’s boys’ 4x400-meter relay team finished first at the Yale Invitational in the Connecticut Class LL/L division in 3 minutes, 33 seconds. Members of the team were Evan Vitagliano, Amill Houston, Ryan Dunning and Porter Carter.

    The Falcons also had a seventh-place finish in the boys’ Connecticut distance medley relay with Dunning, Vitagliano, Kaiden Chandler and Julien Silva (11:21.62) and they were ninth in the boys’ championship 4x200 with Carter, Calvin McCoy, Bernard Drayton and Felipe Dantas (1:34.57).

    Fitch’s girls’ Class L division 4x200 team of Alaina Campbell, Hannah Thomas, Hannah Warner and Grace Cosmopoulos was third in 1:50.33.

    Men’s basketball

    • David Murray paced Connecticut College with 16 points and 10 rebounds in a 58-45 loss to No. 6 Trinity, which limited the Camels to a season-low for points. Cam Schainfeld also had 12 points and five assists for Conn (11-4 overall, 2-1 NESCAC). Henry Vetter had 18 points and eight rebounds for Trinity (16-0, 3-0).

    Women’s basketball

    • Addi Hunter had 12 points and five rebounds for Connecticut College in a 62-50 loss to Trinity at Luce Field House. Rebecca Oberman-Levine had 11 points, six rebounds and five assists for Conn (5-10 overall, 0-3 NESCAC) and Catie Donadio chipped in 10 points. Trinity is 10-5, 1-1.

    Women’s hockey

    • Conn fell 3-0 to No. 3 Amherst at Dayton Arena. Devon Galizio made 28 saves on 29 shots for Conn (5-4-4, 1-4-2 NESCAC), with Amherst scoring twice into an empty net in the final 27 seconds. The teams wrap up their weekend series at 3 p.m. Saturday in New London.
