    Local roundup: NFA’s Amy (shot put), Croughwell (3,200) take Class LL titles

    New Haven — Norwich Free Academy junior Chris Amy won the Class LL state championship in the shot put Thursday with a throw of 57-10 inches and teammate Patrick Croughwell finished first in the 3,200 in 9:42.12.

    NFA finished fourth in the boys’ team standings with 38 points behind Hall (72), Danbury (66) and Manchester (61).

    The Wildcats had three place-winners in the shot put, with Mason Holt second behind Amy (51-10) and Mardocher Civil fifth at 45-9. NFA’s Joal Barros was third in the boys’ high jump at 5-10 and the Wildcats finished fifth in the sprint medley relay, sixth in the 4x200 relay and sixth in the 4x800.

    For the NFA girls, who finished tied for fifth with 28 points, Lily Gilbert was second in the pole vault (10-0) and teammate Elya Anor fourth in the event (9-6).

    Hannah Graham was third in the shot put (32-11.25) and Dylan Phelps fourth (32-1.785), Riley Davis fifth in the 300 (42.74) and Kaitlyn Titus was sixth in the 55 hurdles (9.51). The girls’ 4x400 team was fifth.

    H.S. girls’ basketball

    • Laura Farquahar had 22 points in Killingly’s 58-35 victory over Waterford in Eastern Connecticut Conference Division II. Jennie Macca-Barnes had 10 points for Waterford (7-13, 1-5).

    • Olivia Luurtsema had 11 points in Norwich Tech’s 43-7 victory over Vinal Tech. Autumn Hanks and Lillian Luurtsema had six points each for Norwich Tech (7-10).

    • Freshman Makayla Piaseczny scored 20 points as Lyman Memorial beat Westbrook 49-26 Wednesday. Jenny Lopez had nine points, 10 assists, 10 rebounds and four steals, Kelsey Dunnack scored 10 and Phoebe Carpenter had nine rebounds for the Bulldogs (12-6).

    College wrestling

    • Coast Guard had four pins en route to a 37-10 win over Merchant Marine on Wednesday night. Nate Pitt (149 pounds), Steven Rochard (165), Joe Chapman (174) and Coy Spooner (197) hads pins for the Bears (11-2). Also winning matches for the Bears were Nikko Beato (125), Chase Randall (133), Owen Woolcott (141) and Montville’s Noah Caskey (157).

    Stewart lifts U.S. with tip-in

    • The U.S. women’s basketball team won at the buzzer in its opening game of the 2024 FIBA Women’s Olympic Qualifying Tournament, beating Belgium 81-79 on a tip-in by Breanna Stewart.

    With under five seconds remaining, Stewart, the former UConn great and the 2023 WNBA MVP, inbounded to Kelsey Plum, who drove left but missed her shot. Stewart tipped in the rebound with her left hand to give the Americans the win.

    UConn grad Napheesa Collier scored 10 of her 23 points in the fourth quarter as the U.S. came from behind, having trailed 43-34 at halftime and 66-57 after three quarters. Collier added seven rebounds, three steals and two assists.

    Alyssa Thomas of the WNBA’s Connecticut Sun, who was part of the starting five for the U.S., also scored in double figures with 14 points and finished with seven rebounds.

    The U.S. will next play Nigeria on Friday and Senegal on Sunday.
