    H.S. wrestling: Eight locals win state titles

    Killingly — Five wrestlers from local high schools won titles in consecutive matches on Saturday at the CIAC Class S championship at Killingly High School.

    James Linder Jr. of Montville started the run at 144 pounds with a win. Lucas Gannotti of Waterford won at 150, Montville’s Luke Chapman took the title at 157, Chase Catalano of Old Lyme won the 165 title and Stonington’s Cooper Light was the 175 champion.

    Other champions from local schools included Lincoln Carlson of East Lyme/Norwich Tech in Class L, New London’s Kaiden Smith in Class M and NFA’s Zaire Wallace in Class LL.

    Killingly won the title with 212 points and Lyman Memorial/Windham Tech was second with 158.5. Windham was third (135.5), Montville was eighth (108), Waterford was ninth (107), Griswold/Wheeler was 10th (101), Ledyard was 14th (81), Bacon Academy was 16th (71.5) and Old Lyme was 18th (65.5).

    Linder won by major decision (12-3) over Durkin Stankevich of Nonnewaug, Gannotti beat Naser Saleh of Suffield/Windsor Locks 6-0, Chapman pinned Giovanni Sanchez-Ruelas of Killingly in 2:28, Catalano beat Cooper Theriault-Dinielli of Plainville 7-5 and Light beat Lyman’s Cameron Sammarco 3-1.

    Other wrestlers from Eastern Connecticut Conference schools winning titles were Killingly’s Bradey Jonasch (106), Brady Zadora (132), Soren Rief (215) and Anthony Oates (285) and Windham’s Jaycee Diaz (190).

    Class L

    • East Lyme/Norwich Tech finished seventh with 99 points and had a champion at 175 in Carlson, who pinned Adam Oberic of New Milford in 3:05 for the title. Carlson’s teammate Brayden Soleau was the runnerup at 190, falling to Maximus Konepka of Simsbury 4-0 in the title match. Angel Stimson of East Lyme was fourth at 106. Xavier won the team title with 343 points.

    Class M

    • New London’s Smith won the title at 215 as the Whalers finished sixth with 140 points. Smith pinned Matthew Tarzia of Bethel in 2:27. Andy Martinez-Soliz gave New London a second place at 126, losing by pin in 0:46 to Christopher Manganiello of Notre Dame-West Haven in the title match.

    New London also got a third by Giovanni Da Silva-Escalera at 175 and a fourth from Henry Santana-Liriano at 285. Fitch was 19th with 59.5 points and got a fourth place from Lance Stewart at 44. RHAM won the team title with 211 points.

    Class LL

    • NFA’s Wallace won the title at 190 as the Wildcats finished fifth with 158.5 points. Wallace beat Cole Grenier of Fairfield Warde 7-0 in the title match. Warde won the team title with 221 points.

    NFA’s Landon Herdic (106) and Dylan Vanegas (144) had second-place finishes. Herdic lost to Southington’s Chase Kastner 10-2 and Vanegas fell 7-2 to Victor Petkov of Ridgefield. NFA’s Edward Lavoie was fourth at 132.
