Local college roundup: UConn’s Josh Mooney takes Big East heptathlon title

Chicago — UConn freshman Josh Mooney of Stonington won the Big East Conference championship in the heptathlon Saturday at the Dr. Conrad Worrill Indoor Track and Field Center, finishing with a career-best 5,404 points.

Butler’s Jack Elder was second with 5,357 points and UConn’s Max Ringwall third with 4,830.

Mooney entered Saturday in the lead with the 2,971 points he compiled Friday, having won the heptathlon’s 60-meter dash (6.90 seconds) and the long jump (22 feet, 7.25 inches). He was second in the shot put (41-1) and third in the high jump (5-10.75).

On Saturday, Mooney first won the 60-meter hurdles — his specialty, having won the national championship in the 110 hurdles last spring at Stonington. He took the hurdles in 7.98 seconds.

He then turned in a career-best leap of 14-3.25 in the pole vault to tie Elder for first place in that event before capping the heptathlon with a sixth-place finish in the 1,000 in 2:53.43.

The UConn men and women swept the Big East championships. The men scored 237 points, followed by Butler (116) and Villanova (105), while the women finished with 168, ahead of Villanova (121) and Georgetown (91).

    Men’s hockey

    • Conn College’s comeback effort fell just short in a 5-3 loss to Tufts in the New England Small College Athletic Conference tournament quarterfinals at Malden Valley Forum. No. 6 Conn finished the season 9-14-2 overall, while No. 3 Tufts advanced to the semifinals.

Conn led 2-0 after one period on goals by Logan Cleary and Michael DiMascolo. Tufts, however, scored four unanswered goals in the second period for a 4-2 lead, getting scores from Brendan Fennall, Trace Norwell on a short-handed goal and two in a one-minute span from Tyler Sedlak.

In the third period, DiMascolo cut the Conn deficit to one with his second goal of the game off an assist from Kei Yasuda. The Camels pulled goalie Sean Dynan with just over a minute left for the extra attacker, but it was Tufts which found an empty net to clinch the victory.

Dynan finished with 26 saves in his final game as a Camel and Peter Stanger and Will Winship also had assists. Yasuda won 17 of 25 face-offs as Conn went 2-for-2 on the penalty kill and 0-for-3 on the power play.

    Women’s lacrosse
