    Local college roundup: Mitchell baseball remains unbeaten in GNAC with a sweep

    West Hartford -- The Mitchell College baseball team swept a doubleheader from the University of Saint Joseph on Saturday to maintain its first place standing in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference.

    The Mariners (20-8, 9-0) won by scores of 12-4 and 16-2.

    In the first game, Mitchell scored in every inning but the first and finished with 18 hits. Chas Terni, Jr. (Montville), Michael Gajda and Jack Hayes all had home runs and Michael Ficocelli chipped in three doubles while Cole Lalli added three hits and three RBI. Gajda finished with a team-high four RBI and winning pitcher Chris Gibbs improved to 5-2.

    Hayes contributed two hits and four RBI in the second game and Ficocelli added three hits while Cam Varney was the winning pitcher.

    In other baseball games:

    • Coast Guard Academy rallied from a five-run deficit by scoring six runs in the seventh to beat WPI 10-8 in the first game of a New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference doubleheader.

    Carson Cho had four hits and an RBI and Nathan Stafford and Richard Barkley each had one hit and three RBI for the Bears.

    Coast Guard finished off the sweep with an 11-5 win in the second game, getting two hits each from Wyatt Duthu, Stafford, Barkley and Kael Godshalk. The Bears scored five times in the second, highlighted by a two-run double by Duthu.

    Women’s lacrosse

    • Campbell Johnston, Aine Downey and Caroline Bruce each scored three goals to power Connecticut College past Framingham State 17-4. The Camels improved to 7-6.

    • Coast Guard Academy scored nine goals in the first quarter on the way to a 24-4 win over Emerson College in NEWMAC action. Addy Bass led the Bears (9-4, 4-3) with five goals and four assists while Sarah Skurat had three goals and four assists and Caitlyn Coates had six goals, and Abby Mcallister added four goals and six assists.

    • Lauren Cordero had two goals and Carly Potts and Kiersten Veenstra each added one for Mitchell College in a 20-4 loss to Dean in the GNAC. The Mariners are 0-9, 0-8.

    Men’s lacrosse

    • Ryan Hunter had four goals and an assist for Coast Guard Academy in a 15-11 loss to Springfield in the NEWMAC. Noah Heller had two goals and an assist for the Bears (3-9, 1-6) and Ian Feely also scored twice.

    • Steve Swiderski and Robert Campbell scored goals for Mitchell College in a 21-2 loss to Emmanuel College in the GNAC. The Mariners fell to 0-9, 0-8.

    Football

    • UConn coach Jim Mora named Gordon Sammis the team’s new offensive coordinator. Sammis, a 2007 Virginia graduate, has served as the offensive line coach the last two seasons and replaces Nick Charlton, who left the program.
