Clinton, Christie to campaign for Senate candidates

Hartford — Connecticut’s neck-and-neck U.S. Senate contest between Linda McMahon and Chris Murphy is attracting more political heavyweights to the state, including former President Bill Clinton.

A source confirmed Friday that Clinton, the nation’s 42nd president, is scheduled to campaign here on Oct. 28 for Murphy, a fellow Democrat. The location is to be determined.

Until then, Connecticut will hear from retired comedian U.S. Sen. Al Franken, D-Minn., who will visit the University of Connecticut in Storrs at 3:30 p.m. today to rally for Murphy with U.S. Sen. Richard Blumenthal, Gov. Dannel P. Malloy and U.S. Rep. Joe Courtney, D-2nd District.

On Monday, New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie will make three stops to campaign for McMahon, a fellow Republican. The GOP star is scheduled to be at the Stamford Marriott at 1:30 p.m., the Howland-Hughes Co. in Waterbury at 3:30 p.m. and the Pond House Grille and Banquet in Glastonbury at 5 p.m.

U.S. Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., the 2008 Republican presidential nominee, visited Danbury and Norwalk early this month to rally support for McMahon.
