PROVIDENCE (AP) — Rhode Island's governor has signed legislation aimed at cracking down on people who repeatedly fail to pay their bridge tolls.

Democratic Gov. Gina Raimondo on Monday signed the bill that lawmakers approved last month.

The new law, which takes effect immediately, reduces the number of infractions for a person to be considered a "toll violator," from 20 to 10. For "toll evaders," the number drops from 100 to 20.

Violators are reported to the Division of Motor Vehicles. They can't renew their driver's licenses and vehicle registrations until unpaid tolls and fines are paid.

Evaders may receive a summons to the traffic tribunal and face a license suspension for up to six months, a fine, or both.

House Majority Whip John Edwards, a Portsmouth Democrat, and Sen. Louis DiPalma, a Middletown Democrat, introduced the legislation.
