Scam artists arrested after posing as Homeland Security agents, East Hampton police say

East Hampton — Two New York men who posed as Homeland Security agents to scam a resident out of more than $100,000 in gold were arrested on theft charges, police said Wednesday.

Ya Lou Wang, 36, and Fei Fei Jiang, 29, both undocumented men living in Queens, N.Y., were charged last week with first-degree larceny and conspiracy to commit first-degree larceny after a sting operation, police said.

According to police, the arrests happened April 4 when the men arrived at the resident's home to pick up more than $100,000 in gold. Earlier, someone who claimed to be an agent with Homeland Security had informed the resident of a large debt that needed to be paid in the form of the precious metal.

The "agent" scheduled a time for the gold to be picked up, and undercover East Hampton officers converged on the men made the arrests.

Police said they recovered, and were able to return, more than $100,000 in gold to the resident.

Both suspects remain in custody at the Hartford Correctional Center, Wang in lieu of $750,000 bail and Jiang in lieu of $500,000 bail, prison records show.
