New Haven (AP) — A New Haven native has been named chief of the city's police department after serving on the force for nearly 20 years.

Mayor Toni Harp and other officials announced Tuesday that Otoniel Reyes has been chosen as the new chief of Connecticut's second largest city. He succeeds Anthony Campbell, who retired in March and now works for the Yale Police Department.

Reyes was promoted to assistant chief in 2016 and served as interim chief after Campbell retired.

Harp said Reyes has the credentials and experience needed to lead the department.

Reyes said he is humbled by the appointment. He said the department has made good strides with community policing and trying to earn the trust of the community, but acknowledged much work remains to be done in those areas.
