Comic Brian Regan returns Saturday to Foxwoods

Comics aren't like musicians in one crucial way. Whereas music fans typically attend a concert expecting to hear favorite songs, comedians generally don't repeat much material. Once the punchline's out of the bag, the element of surprise is gone and the whole tension of the set-up is deflated.

Without "greatest hits" to rely on, then, it's incumbent on the touring comic to consistently come up with a whole new show of good-to-great material — which, comparatively speaking, is a lot harder than a band having to simply interject a few new songs into a set of hits.

Regarding standup genius Brian Regan, who performs Saturday in the Grand Theater at Foxwoods, this situation is both good and bad. It's good because Regan — for my money, maybe the funniest comedian alive — seems to churn out incredibly and consistently funny new stuff. The bad news? It means fans don't get to revisit — live, anyway — some of the best routines ever. Regan's "airport" bit and his "hotel registration" take are so perfectly constructed — the slow build, the iconic facial expressions and looming physicality, and the sudden firefall onslaught of several increasingly absurd pay-off lines — that he could do them every night, and they'd never get old.

One way or another, he's gonna be great. And worth noting: virtually no obscenity in Regan's shows.

    Brian Regan, 8 p.m. Saturday, Grand Theater, Foxwoods; $39, $59; 1-800-200-2882.
