    Local roundup: Coast Guard swimmer Brindamour earns third All-America honor of his career

    Shenandoah, Texas — Coast Guard Academy senior Christian Brindamour, the defending national champion in the 50-yard freestyle, placed seventh in the event Wednesday to earn the third swimming All-America honor of his career at the Conroe Natatorium.

    Brindamour posted the third-fastest time, a school-record 19.94 seconds in the preliminaries, but his time of 20.25 was seventh in the finals.

    He was one of three swimmers to break the 20-second mark in the morning preliminaries, the first three to do so this season. His best time this season prior to that was 20.19. The school-record, also belonging to Brindamour, was 20.06, set at the NCAA Championships last season.

    He earned All-America status in the 50 and 100 freestyles last season.

    Brindamour will compete in the 100 backstroke Friday and the 100 freestyle Saturday to close out his career.

    • Connecticut College had a pair of relay teams earn honorable mention All-America placements at the Division III nationals.

    The women's 200-yard medley relay team of Sarah Nappo, Charlotte Nixon, Anna Peterson and Sam Pierce finished 13th in 1:45.87.

    The men's medley relay team of Loring Bowen, Kirk Czelewicz, George Tilneac and Mike Fothergill was 15th in 1:31.01.

    H.S. swimming

    • East Lyme's Benas Kirvelevicius was third in the 100-yard freestyle in 49.58 seconds and sixth in the 50 freestyle in 22.68, leading the Vikings to a seventh-place team finish at the Class M championship meet at Wesleyan. Kirvelevicius also swam a leg on East Lyme's 400 freestyle relay team, which was fifth in 3:26.56. Also on the relay team were Ryan Dumais, Ethan Opsahl and Evan Opsahl. The Vikings finished with 277 points. Brookfield was the team champion with 703 points.

    • Old Lyme's Jacob Olson was eighth in the 500 freestyle at the Class S championship meet at Wesleyan. Olson finished in 5:28.44. Waterford finished 18th in the team standings with 82 points. Old Lyme was 25th with 37 points. Weston won the title with 683.

    H.S. boys' basketball

    • Waterford's Greg Gwudz will coach in the Class M/S game at the 40th Annual Connecticut High School Coaches' Association All-Star Festival at Maloney High School, March 25.

    Old Lyme's Jacob Ballachino and Waterford's Isaiah Jones will represent their schools in the M/S game, which begins at 6:15 p.m.

    Ledyard's DeAnte Bruton, Fitch's John Floyd and New London's Collin Sawyer will play in the Class LL/L game, which is scheduled to tip off at 7:45 p.m.

    Admission is $5 for adults and $3 for children. Proceeds will benefit the CHSCA and its supported charities.

    College track & field

    • Eastern Connecticut State University's Lee Cattanach of New London earned Little East Men's Track Athlete of the Year honors and Taylor Driggers, a Norwich Free Academy graduate also from Eastern, was the Women's Rookie Field Athlete of the Year, as the league announced its major awards for indoor track.

    Cattanach won the Little East and New England Alliance titles in the 800 meters on Feb. 14, setting a conference record in 1:55.86. In each of the final four meets of the season, Cattanach broke his own school record in the event. In last week's Division III national championship meet, he was seventh in 1:55.49, Eastern's first All-American since 2006.

    Driggers placed third in the long jump (5.17 meters) and fourth in the triple jump (10.73) at the Alliance meet to earn All-Alliance and All-Little East honors in both. She capped her season at the New England Open, where she was the first Division III finisher in the long jump.

    Cattanach and Driggers are the first two Eastern athletes to earn LEC major awards in the sport.

    College baseball

    • UConn Avery Point finished its Florida trip with a 7-3 win over the Ontario Blue Jays. John Russell (2-0) earned the victory in relief, allowing five hits and one earned run over six innings with 13 strikeouts and one walk. Pete Aldrich had three hits, scored twice and drove in two runs and Nick Perrelli and Joe Leslie had two hits each for the Pointers (7-5).

    Men's lacrosse

    • Davis Kraft scored five goals, leading Connecticut College to a 13-7 win over SUNY Plattsburgh at Radnor, Pa. Max Luing had four goals and an assist, Briggs Barton had four assists and Bobby Bleistein made 14 saves for Conn (1-5).

    • Dan DiGioia and Jordan Cook each had two goals and an assist to lead Mitchell College past Mount St. Vincent 9-8 for the Mariners' first win of the season. JD LeMay finished with 16 saves in goal and Maximilian Crowley caused three turnovers.
